CMU International Centre for Education 1 16 CMU International Centre for Education In order to work legally in Thailand you must have a Non-immigrant B visa and a Work Permit. A Non-immigrant B visa is issued by a Thai embassy or consulate-general under the authority of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. An extension to a non-immigrant visa is issued by the Immigration Office, whose officers are members of the Royal Thai Police employed in the Immigration Bureau under the Ministry of the Interior. The visa extension will be for the period of your Contract of Employment. A Work Permit, issued by the Provincial Labour Office, City Hall, under the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, will be valid for the period covered by your visa extension. Your employer, in this case Chiang Mai University, supplies some of the documentation required to apply for all of the above. Place to contact: Chiang Mai Provincial Revenue Office (Muang District Branch 1) 1 st floor, District Administration Office, Inthawarorot Road, Muang District, Chiang Mai 50200 Tel : 0-5322-1864 Fax : 0-5322-6085

12 CMU International Centre for Education CMU International Centre for Education 5 While the validity of a Work Permit corresponds to the duration of a Visa, and the expiry date of the Work Permit is usually the same as the Visa, the calculation of the Work Permit fee is based on the issue date of the Work Permit, not the Visa start date. For example, if you have a Visa issued for a 12-month period from September 1 st to August 31 st, depending on the issue date in your Work Permit, there are two ways in which your Work Permit extension fee can be calculated: a. If the issue date on your Work Permit is September 9th, the extension fee is calculated as follows: September 1 st to September 9 th = Baht 750 (fee for less than 3 months) September 10 th to August 31 st = Baht 3,000 (fee for 6 months to 12 months) Under these circumstances you would be required to pay Baht 3,750 for your 12-month Work Permit extension. b. If the issue date on your Work Permit is February 20th, the extension fee is calculated as follows: September 1st to February 20th = Baht 1,500 (fee for 3 months to 6 months) February 21st to August 31st = baht 3,000 (fee for 6 months to 12 months) Under these circumstances you would be required to pay Baht 4,500 for your 12-month Work Permit extension. Permit, the page with the Work Permit notification stamp(s), usually at the back of your passport. You must sign all of the photocopies. 6. Photograph one, 4 cm x 6 cm full-face color photograph, less than 6 months old. 8. *Tax ID card one photocopy. You must sign the photocopy. 9. Tax receipt the Tax Form Por Ngor Dor 91 together with the Tax Office receipt. You need to submit photocopy of the Por Ngor Dor 91 Form with the tax receipt overlaid in either the upper righthand or the lower left-hand corner. This photocopy must be obtained from the Tax Office at the time that you submit your tax return, i.e. the Por Ngor Dor 91 Form, and receive their receipt because the Tax Office retain the original Por Ngor Dor 91 Form. This photocopy can only be made by the Tax Officers and may cost you Baht 25. You must sign the photocopy. 10. You must apply for a Work Permit extension on the last day of your current extension. If your current extension expires on a Saturday or Sunday you must go to the Provincial Labour Office on the preceding Friday and register your intention to apply for an extension. This is then logged into the computer and you will be issued with a numbered receipt. You must then return to the Provincial Labour Office on the following Monday, with the numbered receipt, to apply for an extension, which will then commence on the day after your current extension expired. If you do not register your intention to apply for an extension your Work Permit will expire and you will have to apply for a new Work Permit. The new Work permit and Work Permit Extension are issued at the Provincial Labour Office, City hall. In recent years, the Provincial Labour Office has done a lot to streamline the application procedure and improve the quality of service. However, given the low level of ability in English of the staff at the Provincial Labour Office, unless you can speak Thai language, and understand the vocabulary for the application procedure, you would be strongly advised to have a Thai person accompany you to act as interpreter. When visiting the Provincial Labour Office, and any other government office, you are respectfully requested to dress politely. The Provincial Labour Office, which is located on the Mae Rim Road, is open Monday to Friday 08.30 12.00, 13.00 16.30. Closed on Public holidays. If you arrive at the Provincial Labour Office at 08.30, before the queue develops, and you have all of the required documentation, you can expect to have your application processed within one hour. If you are applying for a new Work Permit, you will have to return to the Provincial Labour Office a week or two after you submit your application to collect the signed copy of your Work Permit. If you are applying for a Work Permit Extension, if the person authorized to sign your extension is in the office the procedure can be completed at that time. If not, you will be asked to return in a few days to collect your Work Permit after it has been signed. If you are offered the choice to wait for a signature or come back in a few days, say that you ll wait. It usually never takes more than about 5-10 minutes to get a signature.
