JOHNSON S INCREASED INVOLVEMENT Situation in Vietnam quickly getting worse S. Vietnamese gov. on brink of collapse VC control 40% of South Believes U.S. cannot be seen as soft, agrees with Kennedy that China and SU cannot see us as weak the biggest damn mess I ever saw. TONKIN GULF RESOLUTION Johnson said attack was unprovoked Americans later learned President manipulated information USS Maddox on spying mission and fired first Before midnight, August 4, 1964 Johnson went on TV and reported USS Maddox (destroyer) been attacked by NV forces and asked for approval of resolution Approved by Congress Aug. 7 - enabled the president to take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against forces of the United States. Two senators opposed I believe history will record we have made a great mistake. We are in effect giving the President war-making powers in the absence of a declaration of war.

WE ARE 100% IN! Dec. 1965 200,000 troops 1966 another 200,000 troops 1967 500,000 troops there I have asked the commanding general, General Westmoreland, what more he needs to meet this mounting aggression.
