1 University of California, San Diego Political Science 244A, Fall 2011 Research on European Integration Fall 2011 Prof. W.M. Chandler SSB 104 Office: SSB 368 Wed. 3:00 to 5:30, Off. Hrs: M/F 2:00-4:00, Overview: This graduate seminar is open only to Ph.D. graduate students. In bridging the two fields of comparative and international politics, the seminar is designed to develop our understanding of the politics of European integration and to provide an opportunity for original research. Introductory sessions will examine the origins and development of the EC/EU and will review theories of integration. We will then investigate the functioning of both institutions and actors in the building of an ever closer European Union. The challenges inherent in the process of creating a supranational political regime will be examined through analysis of conflict and consensus among the member states, as well as the impact of national politics on the functioning of supranational institutions. Seminar Requirements All participants will be active participants in seminar discussions via oral presentations and commentary on current works. Each student will present orally a project plan (Weeks 2-3) and a final oral report (Weeks 8-10). Written work will involve the submission of a 20 page research paper on 7 December 2011. ********** Suggested READINGS: Hix, Simon and Bjørn Høyland, The Political System of the European Union, 3 nd ed., (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011) William Chandler, ed., The Politics of European Integration, Fall 2011.
