ON ARRIVAL IN BERLIN Registering at the Registration Office (Bürgeramt) 1. Students coming from European countries: On arrival in Berlin, international students coming from countries, which are part of the European Union, have to register at the Bürgeramt (Registration Office), within the first days after moving into an apartment or student residence. After the registration you will receive a confirmation letter called Anmeldebestätigung, which you may need to open a bank account or to use other public services. Each district of Berlin has three to four Bürgerämter, but you can go to anyone in Berlin, regardless of where you live. It is important to make an online appointment 1 to 2 month before you arrive in Berlin. Please take the following documents with you: Application Form (Anmeldung bei der Meldebehörde pdf-file ) Valid Passport or ID card Rental agreement (Einzugsbestätigung des Wohnungsgebers) to be completed by the landlord You may also need the following documents: University Admission Notification Statement of financial sponsorship/scholarship letter or bank statement proving sufficient funds to support your educational stay. An account has to be opened at a German bank. Health insurance valid from the day of arrival (optional: Accident-, and Third-Person-Liability Insurances see below) If you don t speak German well, it is very helpful to have a German native speaker for example one of our Students at BiTS- joining you at the Bürgeramt. Here you can find some tips in English for the registration process: http://berlinfo.com/worktime/authorities/getting_started/registration/index.htm If you are unsure about how to fill out the form, please contact us. 2. Students coming from countries outside Europe All students coming from countries outside Europe are required to apply for a visa at the German embassy or consulate in their home country. Up-to-date information on visa requirements is given by the local German embassy. Additional information can be found on the website of the German Federal Foreign Office: http://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/en/einreiseundaufenthalt/visabestimmungen_node.html Even though international students obtain a visa in their home countries they might need to register at the Immigration Office called Ausländerbehörde within 90 days after arrival or before their entry visa has expired (German embassy at home country will inform you). The Immigration Office is exceptionally busy, so we strongly recommend making an appointment 1-2 month BEFORE. For the registration you will need the following documents: Immigration Office s application form Anmeldebestätigung (see section Students from Europe Bürgermant) University Admission Notification / BiTS Student ID Passport Statement of financial sponsorship/scholarship letter or bank statement proving sufficient funds to support your educational stay.
