Genesis ARS Newsletter April 2017 image.gif Editorial Hope all are doing well! Summer is coming! Are you ready? Hope so!! Get your antenna work done now before it's too hot to do anything except talk!! I'm hoping to get my HF antennas upgraded soon and add a couple of VHF beams also. Looking into more "serious" power backup capabilities too. One system in the car will include a 750/1500 watt inverter(got the inverter already), a 100 amp hour AGM battery and a 30 watt solar panel with charge controller(got the panel and controller). The house backup will include 100 amp hour AGM batteries(2) 1500/2500 watt inverter and 100 watt solar panels(2) with charge controller. N1IR photo Don't forget the meeting, last monday of every month! 73 de Bob ka1nma :::::::::::::::::::::::;::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: I hope the club will forgive the lateness of the newsletter. I lost my dear Mother and best friend earlier this month! It has been a very difficult time for me! I enclose the last picture of her taken at home before she passed on. A number of Genesis members knew her. Ellen S. Perkins 1919-2017 RIP Well Hello from Jack W1AKN, Summer is right HERE practically :) The Genesis ARS Boy Scouts in the Sky volunteers, will be practicing for the May 6thScouts in the Sky event at the Plymouth Airport. Well this Sat 4/29, the team will meet at the GARS meeting room and finish the Radio Merit Badge presentation. The presentation consists of 9 displays providing a graphic representation of the 9 modules / requirements for the BSA Radio Merit Badge. A Genesis Volunteer will take each scout thru the presentation and give a brief detailed description to give the scout the info needed to achieve the radio merit badge. The presentation will include both a GOTA VHF station and an active HF station that will serve to complete the BSA RMB requirements.

Any GARS member wishing to share some of their QSL cards can bring them to Chris N1IR, Mike KG1U, or Jack W1AKN and they will be sure to include them in the gift bags the scouts will be receiving as they leave the presentation. I have only mine and need at least 4 more hams for 30 QSL cards each ham! Please consider donating some QSL cards for the scouts???!!! There is something all GARS members can do to help in the Scouts in the Sky effort the scouts need to make 5 contacts each, so it would be great if some of you could standby the repeater the day of May 6 and listen for the scouts and help them achieve their 5 contacts. The HF station, also set up in addition to the GOTA VHF station will be operating on 10 meters at or about 28.400 MHz in order to provide some of the required 5 contacts and anyone equipped for 10 meters operation is asked to listen for scouts there as well. The thinking is to provide both FM and SSB activity for the scouts to get a well rounded demonstration of several modes of operation. Presently we have ZERO - 0 - no volunteers to be on N1ZIZ or 10 meters for these kids? In closing, I would like to remind all to spread the word - Genesis is presenting the General Class training course May 13th and 20th. We have 9 students currently registered and have room for a few more! So, spread the word and let's make a big effort to raise the level of Generals in the Plymouth area :) See you all at the Genesis ARS Sat 4/29, 9am until noon, training session. We will prep for the big show the following weekend! Genesis ARS photo FYI: Think 2017FD - its coming soon to a amateur radio club near you :) 73 de Jack W1AKN Genesis ARS Vice President E-Mail: w1aknatarrl.net Genesis ARS photo Starting in January of 2017 are the monthly Speaking Engagements to be delivered at each monthly Genesis meeting, last Monday evening each month. Treasurer: Treasurer gave the financial report that was voted by members present to except as presented. Committees: No Reports Given Old Business: Repeater - The repeater was inspected by a technician who diagnosed several issues including damage to the cans and cabinet. Upon testing, it was noted that there has been a noticeable reduction of output power over the last 4 months. No parts are available to make repairs other than to the cans. It was proposed to replace the present repeater with a 1 year old ICOM ICHR5000 repeater with less than 50 hours of prior use. The repeater will also include the expertise of WG1U, who is professionally experienced with this equipment. After discussion, the members present voted to approve the purchase of the repeater. Annual Dues: As of March 1, the annual dues have gone from $20 to $25. Upcoming Events:

BSA in the Sky will be held on May 6, 2017. GARS will be holding sessions for the Radio Merit Badge at the event. 12-20 volunteers are needed for the event.
