For human dignity, peace and development Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations in Ukraine
On August 16, the United Nations in Ukraine launched the 70-day countdown to the 24th October UN Day, the anniversary of when the Charter of the United Nations came into force in 1945. During the 70-day campaign, the UN in Ukraine held events, initiatives, culture projects and information campaigns that aimed to raise the public s awareness about the organization s priorities in Ukraine. These included assisting the government and the people of Ukraine in building, through understanding of and respect for human rights, a culture of dignity for a peaceful and transformed Ukraine. Message on United Nations Day 2 Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations in Ukraine
In this 70th anniversary year, I want to express my sincere belief in the successful future of the UN, which is possible only with the full devotion of all its Charter members. The development of friendly and good-neighborly relations among nations, equal in sovereignty, which refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force and which settle international disputes by peaceful means these are the principles, laid down in the Charter of the UN, which have become the basis of modern world order. Mr. Petro Poroshenko, President of Ukraine During the last 70 years, Ukraine has partnered with the United Nations for the aim of human dignity, peace and development. Ukraine was one of the first 51 states to sign the United Nations Charter. Since then, the country has consistently adhered to the purposes and principles of the Charter, substantially contributing to the maintenance of international peace and security, economic and social development, protection of human rights, and the strengthening of international law. Today Ukraine faces many challenges with the current conflict in the East so promoting unity, sustained peace, and tolerance has become more important than ever. The United Nations supports national efforts to build a peaceful, prosperous, strong and united Ukraine. Neal Walker, Humanitarian Coordinator, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine

The United Nations in Ukraine, National Opera of Ukraine, Kyiv Classic symphony orchestra, and a number of private and public companies joined forces to organize an event that would deliver a message of peace through one of the most powerful mediums: the enduring and universal passion of Ukrainian music. The concert was held on 21 October 2015. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin, UN Resident Coordinator Neal Walker and Roman Shpek, a representative of the sponsors, made opening remarks. According to the director of the project and the conductor of Kyiv-Classic orchestra Herman Makarenko, the role of culture is to remind people about the core values of humanity. Musicians and artists from across Ukraine performed folk and classical music typical of their regions, but united in their call for peace and a better future. The image of a peaceful Ukraine was reflected in every ensemble throughout the concert. The event was organized with the support of private companies. Effective partnerships between public entities, private organizations and civil society are particularly important in this globalized world. Traditional roles have become increasingly blurred and promoting sustained peace is now everyone s responsibility.
