- 3 - SUMMARY OF MEETINGS 1 st plenary meeting Item 1: Opening of the thirteenth session The Conference was opened by the temporary President H.E. Mr. Omar Zniber (Morocco), who made a statement. The Conference observed a minute of silence dedicated to prayer or meditation. Item 2: Election of officers (a) Election of the President H.E. Mr. Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to UNIDO, was elected by acclamation to the office of the President of the thirteenth session of the General Conference. (b) Election of other officers The following candidates were elected by acclamation to fill the offices of Vice-Presidents: H.E. Mr. Gianni Ghisi (Italy) H.E. Mr. Yasuyoshi Komizo (Japan) H.E. Mr. Henry Kosegy (Kenya) H.E. Mr. Alejandro Diaz Perez Duarte (Mexico) H.E. Mr. Jose Luis Chicoma Lucar (Peru) H.E. Mr. Marcin Korolec (Poland) H.E. Mr. Alexander Yakovenko (Russian Federation) H.E. Mr. Mustafa Jaffeer (Sri Lanka) H.E. Mr. Mahmoud Hassan Elamin (Sudan) Item 3: Adoption of the agenda The Conference adopted the provisional agenda as contained in document GC.13/1/Rev.2. With the President in the Chair, a statement was made by Mr. Reinhold Lopatka, State Secretary, Federal Ministry of Finance of Austria. Item 22: Appointment of the Director-General The Conference decided to appoint the Director-General by acclamation. With the President in the Chair, statements were made by the representatives of Argentina (on behalf of the G-77 and China), Japan, Brazil (on behalf of GRULAC), Angola (on behalf of the African Group), Pakistan (on behalf of the Asian Group) and Sweden (on behalf of the European Union).

Mr. Raila Odinga, Prime Minister of Kenya; H.E. Mr. Pakalitha Mosisili, Prime Minister of Lesetho; H.E. Mr. Mizengo Pinda, Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania; H.E. Mr. Olafur Grimsson, President of Iceland; Ms. Mazlan Othman, United Nations Office at Vienna (on behalf of the United Nations Secretary-General); Mr. Jean Ping, Chairperson of the African Union; Mr. Surin Pitsuwan, Secretary-General of the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). 2nd plenary meeting Item 1: Opening of the thirteenth session (continued) With the President in the Chair, a pre-recorded video message was delivered by H.E. Ms. Maud Olofsson, Deputy Prime Minister of Sweden and a statement was made by Mr. Jan Kubiš, Executive Director of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). Items 7 to 21 and 23: With the President in the Chair, statements were made by the representatives of China, Poland, South Africa, Islamic Republic of Iran, Côte d Ivoire, Japan and Sudan. Item 9: Industrial Development Forum (Part I): Global Economic Slowdown: the Impact on Manufacturing The introduction was made by the moderator, Mr. Todd Benjamin, Financial Editor of CNN. Panellists: Mr. Justin Yifu Lin, Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank; Mr. Surin Pitsuwan, Secretary General, Association of Southeast Asian Nations, (ASEAN); Mr. Mandisi Bongani Mabuto Mpahlwa, Economic Advisor to the President of South Africa; Mr. Dirk Pilat, Head of the Structural Policy Division, Director of Science, Technology and Industry, OECD; Mr. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria; Mr. Jean-Michel Severino, CEO Agence française de développement (AFD), Paris, and Mr. Shujiro Urata, Professor of International Economics, Waseda University.
