INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES Undergraduate Courses Taught COMS 285: Cases in Persuasion (KU, 1 Semesters) This course explores basic principles that explain the effect and effectiveness of the arts of persuasion currently practiced in American society. The class explores incidents leading to the discovery of principles and theories that explain them. Continuing emphasis on issues concerning the ethical character of persuasion in contemporary life. COMS 235: Rhetoric and Social Influence (KU, 4 Semesters) This course focuses on the analysis and evaluation of rhetorical strategy as a tool overcome attitudinal, societal, and audience barriers while maximizing advantages in a given situation. Special focus is given to strategy types including rational argument, narrative strategy, credibility strategies, aesthetic strategies, confrontation strategies, and the use of values, needs, and symbols as persuasive tools. Additional focus on genre conventions and the use of critical analysis to evaluate public arguments. COMS 230: Introduction to Debate (KU, 3 Semesters) This course focuses on the study of public debate, argumentation and refutation. Special consideration is given to ethical conduct of speech and debate in a free society. Focus on debate resolutions, construction of affirmative and negative cases, evidence production and research, policy debate format, and debating skills including refutation, cross examination, and rebuttal construction. COMS 130: Speaker-Audience Communication (KU, 8 semesters) This course focuses on the study of rhetorical theory and its application to the preparation, presentation and criticism of oral discourse in audience situations. Focus on civic engagement, argument development, research, speech presentation, evidence and rational argument, audience analysis, and presentation skills.
