What distinguishes us from others? AFS The three letters AFS represent the long history of the American Field Service an organization that originated during World War I and operated as a voluntary medical service during both World Wars, now an almost unrivalled institution in terms of successfully promoting understanding among nations and intercultural exchange. Within 0 years, AFS has established itself as the world s largest exchange program provider. The organization s goal has remained consistent since its founding in 98: to give young people the chance to get to know other cultures and thus promote tolerance. AFS counts Karlshochschule as a strong partner in this endeavour, teaming up with the University to launch this scholarship. Intercultural and Communication Relations Media Citizenship and Civic Engagement Marketing ization, Governance and Law Sustainability Tourism Politics, Philosophy and Economics Arts and Cultural Event The sort of University I want is one where an ideal education is also focussed on personal development and social responsibility. A University that wants to astound its student body and help them mature into fully formed, reflective individuals prepared and able to help shape and form our joint futures. All of the degree programs at Karlshochschule are accredited by FIBAA (Foundation for Administration Accreditation) with top results. Additionally, as of September 0, all eight Bachelor degree programs carry the FIBAA Premium Seal: A total of 0 quality criteria were met, more than half of those were exceeded, and four were even assessed as excellent. That is the sensational result of the accreditation for eight Bachelor degree programs at Karlshochschule University, Karlsruhe. The re-accreditation of the degree programs (...) confirms the high quality of the courses of studies and clearly demonstrates the positive developments that have taken place since the initial accreditation five years ago. I can imagine this is a University that is constantly striving to improve, yet remains fully grounded, and that the relationship between all members of the faculty and the student body is characterized by both trust and humanity.

Intercultural and Communication A weekend concert in London, a backpacking trip with friends through France, three months voluntary work in India, no wonder it seems as if I get around a bit. Even if I wasn t a great world explorer before, one thing is crystal clear to me. The faster globalization takes over, the more important local cultures become and the more they will be networked. This may sound unusual to some but it also applies to companies and organizations. That s why I m interested in a degree course that considers this view in terms of management theory, because tomorrow, international companies will simply be different. To fully appreciate these changing circumstances, Karlshochschule expanded their degree course of classical economic theory modules, to include events, cultural theory, corporate culture, international partnerships and intercultural competence. As well as that, I can actually put my intercultural skills in international business projects to the test and refine them during my semester abroad and internship. At the end of my studies I will be able mediate between different cultures to generate worthwhile synergies. And that s because I have understood how to communicate in a variety of international and intercultural contexts. Relations I get switched on when others tend to turn off. I m passionately interested in what s happening in the world and it s effects. I soak up new information like a sponge and throw myself into any new political debate. The major issues and challenges in our world especially revolving around peace, prosperity, environmental protection, justice and human rights are what excite and drive me on. I want to be socially engaged and I m curious about other cultures and ways of thinking. I m interested in building bridges and find it rewarding when I can contribute to achieving solutions to the major challenge of finding peaceful resolutions to a conflict. I believe in diplomacy as a driving force on the conflict-ridden world stage. I want to encourage people to stop fighting each other with weapons or exploiting their economic power, but negotiate instead with words, knowledge and values. I see myself as a future intermediary between cultures and their respective interests. I want to learn about and understand the context of international politics and economics, ecology and ethics, legal regulations and cultural ideas, as well as the art of diplomatic negotiations from scratch. That s why I m studying Relations. The exchange and trade of goods and services is what defines all our human relationships. That is why I am sure economics needs to have a human perspective and be guided by clear values. I want to understand the economy as something that is not merely a way of maximizing returns and having simply a profit mentality, but by sustainability and commitment. An economy where globalization is perceived not as a threat but as an opportunity for fair and humane treatment. This is one of the reasons I chose the study program at the Karlshochschule. and linguistic phenomenon. Here is where I can acquire the ability to identify differences within and between cultures and to act with confidence on an international level. One of the things that has helped me has been the wide range of management tools available to me at the Karlshochschule. One of the other benefits is that the course has a completely international orientation: Right from the beginning, English is the course language, and learning at least one of another eight languages, such as Chinese or Russian, is mandatory. Because here the economy is studied not just in economic terms, but also as a cultural Bachelor thesis including its defense Current Issues in Compulsory ization in Marketing Operations Finance Ethics in ization Sustainability Practice + (+) ECTS Lg.. Citizenship and Civic Engagement My objective is to make sense of the society in which I live. I want to develop ideas for my initiatives, my group or my start-up, that help my ideals to flourish. I want to make a difference in this world. I want to start right here and right now, even while I m studying, to put the knowledge and skills I ve acquired into practice. I don t want to simply explore possibilities, I want my research to bring about change in society and by using words, images and actions, also to the minds of people. I m doing volunteer work for the subject that is my passion. I will go to the streets to protest against injustice or to promote my beliefs. I am involved in social networks where I start petitions, campaigns and debates. That s where I mobilize people to join me and support my ideas via crowdfunding. I want to sustainably and constructively change the world in which we live. I want to live the changes and make a commitment to my future profession, and that s why I m studying Citizenship and Civic Engagement at Karlshochschule. Marketing We live in a world where we believe we have to market ourselves constantly, whether we are being interviewed by potential employers or when we meet a new friend. We are also being subjected to marketing every day from other people trying to sell us a new telecommunications contract or even a higher education degree program. So when is this marketing just colourful packaging with no value and when is it about an authentic product, a helpful service or an interesting person? I would like to be the person standing behind the convincing brands of tomorrow. Above all I would like to bring meaningful products to market. I want to know how to detect new trends and use them to develop successful concepts. After all, I know that unless I find the pulse of the times and continue to satisfy people with my products, I will not be able to gain their loyalty and they won t recommend me to others. This is why I have decided to study Marketing. Here I will learn how my company and customers are embedded in a complex culture which I need to understand before I can develop suitable ideas. Karls helps me to look behind the scenes. I gain an understanding of the mechanisms and contexts which play a role on both sides company and consumers. Then, finally, I can also successfully excite other people with my ideas. ization, Governance and Law ization as a meeting of different cultures poses enormous challenges. On the one hand, global trade can bring us closer together in both goods and knowledge. On the other hand, it becomes increasingly difficult to regulate global responsibilities. For me, the issues of social justice, universal human rights and the institutions that protect them, are immensely important. Can it be fair that if I pay 00 for a pair of shoes and that the people who made them, receive just a fraction as their wage? Can it be fair that people are tortured and killed merely because of what they say and think? I feel that as the world grows closer, new problems come up each day. Law to me, is more than just a complex set of rules that everyone exploits for their own advantage. For me law is an expression of the pursuit of justice. It s no longer just part of a national culture, but a way to bring our international relations to a new level, where only the rights of the strongest matter. For me, international institutions are the cornerstones of fair prosperity, long term peace and sustainable civilization processes. I want to contribute to the rules of our world, and with my help and the organization for which I will work for later, see them put into action. I want to understand it all and that s why I m studying ization, Governance and Law at Karlshochschule. Sustainability Sustainability is the central challenge of the st century in business and society, both local as well as on the global level. Sustainability to me is an ecological sound economic development that is designed socially inclusive and culturally sensitive by internationally and interdisciplinary trained people with a passion to think and work together and find new solutions for the great challenges of our time. I am especially interested in issues related to the ecological and societal responsibility of business in the light of globalization and climate change. Of key importance to me is taking into account an intercultural perspective on different ethical questions of a sustainable development in business and society. With this study program I will be well equipped to become a pioneer in the field of Sustainability. I will acquire in-depth knowledge allowing me to communicate and work successfully with all relevant actors in the field of sustainable business with corporate managers just as well as with representatives of NGOs and national and international institutions. Later I will work on all aspects of sustainability management with companies of different industries, with consultancies and innovative start-ups, with think-tanks and public institutions. Tourism As a tourism manager you can certainly explore the glamorous world of luxury hotels, cruise ships and tropical islands, and obtaining the skills and knowledge to do that I can get at the Karlshochschule. After that I ll be able to work in management for airlines, luxury hotels or cruise shipping companies. As well as that, I can gain experience of being a professional tourism manager from an anthropological and philosophical point of view, which brings a whole new perspective to the concept of travel. As you know, travel has become a part of our daily lives. Even if simply visit a museum or go to the movies, I m still basically a tourist. And when I use the Internet to offer tourists my couch to sleep on, I get a whole new range of intercultural perspectives and effectively travel myself. So in other words, this study program expands my views on travel and puts tourism under a critical spotlight, and especially with regard to its environmental and social impacts. I won t just study the traveler s point of view, but also those of the locals and the travel companies. In fact, I imagine my journey has already begun, and it s definitely going to be an exciting trip. It s one of the reasons I ve chosen this degree course in Tourism at the Karlshochschule. Politics, Philosophy and Economics I ve often wondered where I come from, where I m going and what binds creation s inmost energies. I m interested in economics but not the one that s limited exclusively to mathematics, strives for profit and with its complex needs for simple cost/benefit analyses, leaves people out. I ve always wondered why it s always economists that tell us about crises in the media and philosophers are never asked for a solution. I don t want to choose between a world of numbers, one of the words and the deeds. I long for answers to the questions about the equitable co-existence of fair trade and fair society reforms and often only find criticism of the thinkers and philosophers suggestions. I m interested in politics as a practical tool of reason and am fascinated by the differences of cultures that clash with the globalization of economies. I also wonder if there s an economic system that doesn t, in the long term, destroy the planet. Maybe there s a different approach that brings prosperity for all and is an alternative to what we already have. I want to learn how to resolve conflicts, to debate and to not just simply express my views, but to steadily develop them. I want to have very broad horizons. That s why I study Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Karlshochschule.
