Carolin Rapp Dr. rer. soc. University of Bern, Institute of Political Science Fabrikstrasse 8, CH-3012 Bern +41-(0)31-631-5362 mail@carolinrapp.com www.carolinrapp.com Research Interests My research is embedded in areas of Political Sociology, Political Psychology as well as Comparative Politics. My research ranges from question of tolerance and anti-immigrant attitudes to the explanation of political and social behaviour in the European context. Based on my involvement in the EU FP7 research project CUPESSE, my interest further involves issues of inequality as well as youth unemployment. Besides this, I m a devotee of quantitative methods and survey methodology. Education 11/2013 PhD in Political Science (Dr. rer. soc.), University of Bern, Switzerland. Title of thesis Synopsis Supervision Tolerance in Switzerland and Europe. Empirical Analyses on the Existence and Causes in Comparative Perspective My PhD thesis contributes to the ongoing discussion on how tolerance may be fostered in Western European countries in general and Switzerland in specific. Two main research question lie at the core of the thesis: (1) How do threat pcerceptions and contact with diverse groupings relate to the fomration of intolerance in Switzerland? (2) In how far may contextual factors such as welfare state expenditures contribute to the formation of intolerance towards immigrants in 15 Western European countries? These questions were answered in an empirical manner making use of hierarchical models based on a new data set from Switzerland and Eurobarometer survey data from 1997.
