Tim Malloy, Assistant Director (203) 645-8043 FOR RELEASE: FEBRUARY 6, 2018 Rubenstein Pat Smith (212) 843-8026 TRUMP TRYING TO DERAIL RUSSIA PROBE, U.S. VOTERS TELL QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY NATIONAL POLL; DON T SHUT GOVERNMENT OVER IMMIGRATION, VOTERS SAY 2-1 President Donald Trump has attempted to derail or obstruct the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, American voters say 53 41 percent in a Quinnipiac University National Poll released today. Voters are divided on whether Republicans in Congress are trying to derail or obstruct Special Counsel Robert Mueller s investigation into possible links between President Trump s 2016 campaign and the Russian government as 46 percent say there is GOP obstruction and 44 percent say there is no obstruction, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds. Mueller s investigation is legitimate, 50 percent of voters say, as 42 percent say it is a political witch hunt. In a separate question, voters say 56 28 percent the probe is fair. While there is an obvious partisan divide on these questions, independent voters say: 56 37 percent that Trump is attempting to derail the Russian investigation; 49 42 percent that Republicans in Congress are trying to derail the Russian probe; 54 39 percent that the investigation is legitimate rather than a witch hunt. American voters approve 48 36 percent of the way the FBI is handling its job, compared to 46 38 percent in a January 13, 2017, Quinnipiac University Poll. The FBI is not biased against Trump, voters say 55 33 percent. Special Counsel Robert Mueller is not out to get President Donald Trump, American voters say, but they do feel the president is out to get Mueller, said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. And almost half of voters think Republicans in Congress are trying to obstruct the Russian investigation. Despite the beating they ve taken from the White House, the judiciary and the intelligence communities are considered a lot more trustworthy than the Oval Office and the Fourth Estate. -more-

Quinnipiac University Poll/February 6, 2018 page 2 American voters do not trust President Trump 55 41 percent to do what is right. Voters also say 57 38 percent, they do not trust the media to do what is right. Voters trust the U.S. court system 67 28 percent to do what is right and trust U.S. intelligence agencies 61 31 percent to do what is right. Republicans in Congress put party over country, voters say 71 23 percent and Democrats in Congress also put party over country, voters say 63 31 percent. Support for Dreamers Undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children so-called Dreamers should be allowed to stay in the U.S. and eventually apply for citizenship, voters say 81 14 percent. Support for Dreamers is strong among every party, gender, education, age and racial group. American voters say 66 30 percent that it is not worth shutting down the government over the issue of immigration. Every listed group opposes shutting down the government. Voters oppose 59 37 percent building a wall along the border with Mexico. Opposition jumps to 65 33 percent in a question noting that Trump has asked Congress for $25 billion for the wall. American voters disagree with Trump on other immigration issues, saying: 63 33 percent that undocumented immigrants do not take jobs away from U.S. citizens; 72 17 percent that undocumented immigrants do not commit more crimes than citizens; 54 percent that the rate of legal immigration should be kept the same, as 24 percent say it should be increased and 17 percent say it should be decreased. Voters say immigrants don t take our jobs and live far more exemplary lives than they are given credit for by the White House, Malloy said. Voters support 87 10 percent increasing federal infrastructure spending. Infrastructure spending is mainly the responsibility of the federal government, 36 percent of voters say, as 39 percent say this spending is mainly a state responsibility and 20 percent say both the federal government and the states are equally responsible. From February 2 5, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,333 voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 3.3 percentage points, including the design effect. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts nationwide public opinion surveys, and statewide polls in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa and Colorado as a public service and for research.
