Humanities/English 7 Cultural Identity Project Shafer/Pohl Your personal identity is often tied to the culture of your family. America is made up of many different cultures, making our country a salad bowl of diversity. Almost every American today had a relative that immigrated to the United States from another country. Your job is to find out who one of those people in your family is or was and do research on their culture and experiences as an immigrant. You will also interview a family member who lived his/her teenage years during the 1950s-1970s. As we ve read The Outsiders, you ve learned a lot about the 1960s culture of teenagers in Midwest America; you re now living as a teenager in the 21 st century. Your family member s experience during the 1960s will help connect the novel s culture to your own. Research Objective: 1. Discover the person in your family who made the decision to immigrate to the United States by interviewing a family member. This must be a person who directly affects you and the reason you live in this country today. If you are Native American you are to research your tribe and their possible emigration (i.e. find out where your tribe resides today and how they ended up in that part of the U.S.). a. Gather documents and records about your immigrant ancestor, if possible. For example: photographs, travel tickets, memorabilia, journals, etc. b. Research their country of origin and discover what was going on in that country at the time of your ancestor s immigration and what may have caused their immigration. c. Make a family tree showing how you are related to the ancestor who immigrated. 2. Interview a family member who was a teenager during the 1950s-1970s in order to discover how their experience compares to the lives of the characters in The Outsiders. This person does NOT have to be your immigrant ancestor. 1960s Teenage Life Essay: (English 7) As we ve been reading The Outsiders, we ve learned about the culture of Midwest America in the 1960s. In order to help connect this novel and its content with your own life, you ll interview a family member who was a teenager during the 1950s-1970s. Find out what life was like for your family member at that time. Consider the following guidelines, and refer to the interview example questions you ll get in What did teens do during their free time? How was the school/classroom/homework experience different than your own? What were the fashions and fads? What were the popular movies and songs/bands? Your essay should answer: how was life as a teenager for your family member different than your life as a teenager (or almost teenager) now? You ll get a more detailed outline in English. The essay should be in MLA format: No less than 2 full pages and no more than 4 pages long. You must use at least three sources and cite them correctly using MLA citation.

PowerPoint and Presentation: (Humanities 7) 1. Title Slide: You must have a title slide that includes a title, your name, due date and your class period. 2. Slide 2: Introduce your immigrant ancestor, what country they came from and when in 3-5 sentences. of the person, if available. 3. Slide 3: A diagram of your family tree that includes yourself and the immigrant ancestor. Include a description of how you are related. 4. Slide 4: A map documenting your ancestor s journey from their country of origin to the U.S. Describe their journey in 3-5 sentences. 5. Slide 5: Describe why they left their country and came to the United States in 5-8 sentences. Was it a push or a pull factor? Include pictures that represent their reason(s) for leaving that country and coming to the United States. 6. Slide 6: Describe the culture of their country of origin in 3-5 sentences. Include pictures of their home culture, for example: the country s flag, dress, customs, food, religion, politics, etc. 7. Slide 7: Describe their impact on your family today in 3-5 sentences. How has their journey and culture affected your family (i.e. religion, food, language, etc)? Include current family pictures. 8. Slide 8: Works cited page. You must use at least three sources, two primary and one secondary, and cite them correctly using MLA citation. All pictures and visuals used must also be cited correctly. You will present your ancestor s story of immigration using your PowerPoint to the class in a 3-4 minute presentation. **Extra Credit opportunity: Bring a dish from your immigrant s country of origin to share with other students. We will have a Multicultural Potluck at lunch on Friday, October 20 th in the MPR. Bring enough food to feed 20 people and include a note card that includes your name, where the dish is from, and what it is, including an ingredient list for those with allergies. Note: Your PowerPoint must be turned into Mrs. Shafer on Monday, October 16, 2017 or before via Google Classroom no later than 10pm. If you are absent, you will do the presentation the day you return to school. The paper must be turned in to Ms. Pohl on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 or before, including original rough draft and revised final draft. There will be no exceptions to the late policy. I have read and understand the instructions and due date for the 1st quarter project. Cultural Identity Project Timeline This timeline is designed to help you stay on track for your project. Check off items as you complete them. Week 1: August 28 th September 4 th Bring back project slip signed August 30th Interview family, starting with parents, to find your immigrant ancestor. **Now is the time to ask family members to send you information.** Find out what country the person immigrated from and when they immigrated. Interview family members to find out who was a teenager during the 1950s-1970s. Week 2: September 5 th - 11 th Go to the library (or online library) and start research on the country of origin. Begin filling out your Research Objectives and Sources Checklist. Begin customizing interview questions to fit your situation. Set up interview with your teen family member. Week 3: September 12 th - 18 th Continue interviews to find out as much information about the person who immigrated as possible. Gather artifacts from the person, i.e. pictures, passports, journals, etc. Research Objectives and Sources Checklist due to Mrs. Shafer: September 18 th. Conduct and record your interview with your teen family member. Interview Notes due to Ms. Pohl: September 18 th Week 4: September 19 th - 25 th Start your PowerPoint by picking a design and making your title slide. Begin gathering the required visuals for your PowerPoint. Write a rough draft of your essay. Be sure to document your resources. Rough Draft due to Ms. Pohl: September 22

Week 5: September 26 th - October 2 nd Put your PowerPoint together. Create your family tree up to the person you are doing your project on. Contact your teen family member if you need more information. Week 6: October 3 rd 9 th Go over your PowerPoint one last time and make any corrections. Start putting together your presentation. You may use notecards. Revise and edit the final draft of your essay. Week 7: October 10 th 16 th Practice your presentation. It should be no less than 3 minutes and no more than 4 minutes long. Finalize your PowerPoint Presentation. Due: Monday, October 16 th by 10 pm. Turn in your digital file to Mrs. Shafer via Google Classroom. PowerPoint Presentations will take place in Humanities October 17-19 th. Finalize your Essay. Due: Wednesday, October 11 th to Ms. Pohl. October 20 th at lunch: Multicultural Potluck Celebration in the MPR!!!
