1. Introduction: Project Rationale Address 3 main challenges linked to South-South migration research: Data gaps Lack of cooperation between researchers and policymakers Lack of research capacity The Observatory is a component of the Intra-ACP Migration Facility, aimed at supporting ACP States to better understand and manage migratory flows. 3

Introduction: Objectives Establish a network of research centres, universities, government agencies, civil society, media and the private sector in the six ACP regions Consolidate existing migration data and respond to research and policy needs Provide policy-makers, the civil society, media and the public at large with reliable and harmonized data migration Training and capacity reinforcement of multi-disciplinary South specialists and experts 4

Overview of Planned Activities: Capacity Building Inter-regional training workshops for government officials, statisticians and civil society National training workshops, based on nationally defined research and policy priorities Online Compendium of migration and development training manuals, guide books, resource kits, methodologies and training workshops Online training modules in Essentials of Migration Management and Essentials of Migration Practice (EMM and EMP) Development of tailored training tools for the public at large and classroom settings on thematic policy development Sharing of best practices among ACP countries and regions 12

Overview of Planned Activities: Capacity Building (cont d) Planned Trainings 2012: Data Analysis and Policy Development Location (tbd): Data analysis, policy development, thematic policy areas, implementation strategies, monitoring and evaluation (inter-regional training) National training workshops, follow ups of inter-regional trainings with specific focus on priority thematic areas using ACP Observatory research products 14

Overview of Planned Activities: Capacity Building (cont d) Planned trainings 2013: Project Cycle Management National training workshops in project management cycles to guarantee the sustainability of national research networks (project development, donor relations, calls for proposals, monitoring, etc.) 15

Opportunities for Synergies Exchange of good practices and lessons-learned in research conducted by UN and other agencies Support of training activities through existing training modules Enlarging the network of migration researchers through promotion of ACP Observatory and registering via the website Cooperation and co-funding 16

Communication and Visibility Participation in high-level events related to South- South Migration, Migration and Development, etc. Review and edition of research documents proposed by other organizations Exchange of information and contacts between relevant organizations through the Observatory website Communication activities for the general public in ACP and EU countries such as: Information campaigns through arts (concerts, music, comic strips, TV shows) Activities with the ACP Observatory Goodwill Envoy Awareness raising activities in pilot countries 17
