THE EIGHTH ANNUAL ALABAMA MODEL UNITED NATIONS Russian Civil War JCC: The Russian Imperial Army (The White Army) Committee Abstract Crisis Director Ciara Malaugh clmalaugh@crimson.ua.edu Chair Rachel Brasier rabraiser@crimson.ua.edu

THE EIGHTH ALABAMA MODEL UNITED NATIONS ALMUN VIII 2 URGENT: CHAOS IN RUSSIA Undisclosed Sender Undisclosed Location Delegates, I write to you not as an advocate for either side, but as a party concerned about the future of Russia. For my own safety, I refuse to disclose my name, but I beg of you to listen. These past few months have been tumultuous and violent; the murder of the Romanov s and the Provisional Government was a fragile period, but yesterday, the Provisional Government was overthrown violently by the Bolshevik Party, in what has been deemed the October Revolution. The Bolsheviks find their leader in Vladimir Lenin. I do not know what will happen as the country proceeds forth, but there are clearly emerging and influential dynamics. Although the Bolsheviks may have gained power, they will not persist to rule without resistance. A WHITE ARMY has organized in direct opposition to the Bolsheviks, who form the RED ARMY. The WHITE ARMY calls themselves the Russian Imperial Army, and they are attempting to gain back control of Russia from the Bolsheviks. Their strength comes from profound military strategy and their leader, Alexander Kolchak. The ideologies of the members differ, and they lack popular support, but they have laudable experience with warfare and administration, as well as an unbreakable anti- Communist sentiment that permeates into all of their work. The RED ARMY, or the People and Worker s Army, currently controls Russia. Its members stem from the Council of People s Commissioners, the official ruling body of Russia. It is possible that they will not be in power for long. Their primary goal 2 February 19 to 21, 2016

THE EIGHTH ALABAMA MODEL UNITED NATIONS ALMUN VIII 3 is to keep control of the state and establish a stable Marxist regime. While they have a lot of popular support, establishing legitimacy as a regime is no small task, especially while fighting against the fiercely trained military force of the WHITE ARMY. Their leadership is strong but extremely inexperienced. However, the struggle for control of Russia is much greater than a simple quibble over military prowess. The Russian people are starving. There are whispers of rebellions out East. Furthermore, the national is still engulfed in the global struggle of World War I, and each side will need to develop relationships with international allies. One cannot win this Civil War without international support. Be careful with the Germans, the Americans, the Ottomans. There is more to each of these powers than what we currently see. Protect yourself and your leaders. The country is fragile, and I fear for its future if this behemoth struggle is not resolved quickly, especially as the global dynamic shifts (and shifting, it is). This is a battle of ideology. This is a battle of power. This is a battle of people. This is a battle of strategy. This is a battle, ultimately, for a greater Russia. I don t know what is best for the future of Russia, but I do know that whatever happens needs to happen soon, before we lose control of the very state we love to a force greater than Monarchism or Communism. Please, resolve this issue before somebody else does. Solidarity, A Concerned Citizen. 3 February 19 to 21, 2016

THE EIGHTH ALABAMA MODEL UNITED NATIONS ALMUN VIII 4 Здравствуйте! Greetings, esteemed representatives of the Imperial Russian Forces! This February, you will be facing off against the Red Army for the future of Russia. While the communist movement threatens from within, you will also need to navigate the treacherous waters of international politics as World War I rages on and other disasters may loom unseen just over the horizon. It is the responsibility of this committee not only to defeat the Reds and secure power in Russia, but also to make the choices that will guarantee the survival of our great nation. As generals and directors of the Imperial Russian Forces, it is your responsibility to once again consolidate power in Saint Petersburg. While nothing can bring back the Tsar or his family, царство их небесное, you can return the Russian Empire to its former glory and preserve its proud monarchical tradition. That is your charge. You have sworn to protect Russia from every threat, internal and external, and now you must do so through innovative strategy and masterful diplomacy. The people are counting on you to stand between them and the chaos that the communists will bring if you fail. We can prevail, we must prevail, and we will prevail. Всем удачи! Alexander Kolchak Supreme Ruler of Russia 4 February 19 to 21, 2016
