1. READING COMPREHENSION Read the following text and answer the questions on the next page. Welcome, number seven billion On October 31, 2011, earth s seven billionth inhabitant was born, according to official UN population estimates. Of course, the data are not really accurate enough to calculate the exact day or even year of the arrival of human number 7bn. But the symbolic moment has restarted the debate on overpopulation. Not since the population bomb alarm of the 1960s and early 1970s when there were half as many people on the planet as there are today has the issue been so prominent. The tone of the discussion is generally less pessimistic than it was 40 years ago, but the central concerns still remain: How many people can live sustainably on this planet? Can we feed a global population that is growing by 76m per year and will exceed 9bn by 2050? And will the growing number of people on the earth eventually cause catastrophic environmental damage, from climate change to mass extinction of wildlife? Unfortunately, scientists cannot agree on an answer. Estimates of how many humans the earth can support range from a billion to a trillion people, says Joel Cohen, head of the Laboratory of Populations at Rockefeller University, New York. Those numbers are really political numbers, designed to support a particular viewpoint. However, Sir John Sulston of the University of Manchester, who is leading a study of global population for Britain s Royal Society, says the goal should not be to pack as many people as possible on to the planet. We want to aim for a high quality of life and not just to scrape along. Assuming there is no global disaster, the number of people on earth will pass 8bn within the next 15 years or so. And people will still disagree over whether the planet is overpopulated.

Questions Write "T" for true or "F" for false on the lines provided. 1. The birth date of the 7th billion human is based on a precise mathematical calculation. 2. The passing of the 7 billion mark has symbolic significance. 3. Forty years ago the tone of the discussion was optimistic. 4. Today s debate focuses on the same issues as the debate in 1960s and early 1970s. 5. One major concern is that people will not have enough food to eat. 6. The population is growing by more than 70m each year. 7. Scientists have reached a consensus on the issue. 8. People use population figures to support their own point of view. 9. Sir John Sulston argues that we should focus on quality of life rather than on numbers. 10. The earth s population is expected to double in the next 15 years. 10 points
