APPROVED GUADALUPE UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF EDUCATION MINUTES OF REGULAR SCHOOL BOARD MEETING December 9, 2015 Board President, Anna Marie Michaud, called the regular meeting of December 9, 2015 to order at 5:30 p.m. and the flag salute was also held at this time. Closed Session Reconvene Board adjourned to Closed Session at 5:31 p.m. Board President, Anna Marie Michaud called the meeting back to order at 6:09 p.m. and announced the following: Mrs. Michaud announced no action was taken in Closed Session Annual Organization Superintendent, Mr. Cora called for the annual election of officers. Ayes: Sabedra-Cuello, Michaud, Baro and Cepeda 2016 County Committee Representative: Motion was made by Mrs. Michaud, seconded by Mrs. Cepeda and carried to appoint Mrs. Sabedra-Cuello to the 2016 Santa Barbara County Committee on School Organization (County Committee) Ayes: Michaud, Cepeda and Baro Alternate - 2016 County Committee Representative: Motion was made by Mrs. Cepeda, seconded by Ms. Baro and carried to appoint Mrs. Diana Arriola as Alternate to the 2016 Santa Barbara County Committee on School Orgnization (County Committee) Ayes: Baro, Sabedra-Cuello, Michaud, and Cepeda 2016 Meeting Schedule At this time the Board discussed and selected the meeting Schedule for 2016 as follows: Board Meeting Location: Mary Buren Elementary School, Multi-purpose Room; 1050 Peralta Street, Guadalupe, CA 93434 Meeting Days and Time: Regular Meetings will be held the second Wednesday of each month, 5:30 pm. Meeting Alternate Dates: June 8, 2016 to June 15, 2016 and Special Board Meeting, Wednesday, June 22, 2016 (Formal LCAP & 2016/2017 Budget Adoption). Public Comments: Superintendent s Reports No public comments were presented at this time. Mr. Cora is very proud of the national exposure with the recent Ellen DeGeneres Show. Assistant Principal, Mrs. Angela Soares played the show s video clip of the library s unveiling. Mr. Cora acknowledged and thanked everyone who was involved in the project and especially to Ms. Ashley Thompson for initiating the writing of the letter to the Ellen Show. Mr. Cora also thanked the Board for taking into considering the naming/dedication of the library after the Ellen DeGeneres Show. Mr. Cora reported the CSBA Conference was very informative. Had an opportunity to meet one on one with attorneys and spend time with our school board members. Mr. Cora announced the holiday parade in Guadalupe is this Saturday. There will be approximately 70 students/staff members participating in the parade. The Kermit McKenzie Jr. High School Winter Gala is also scheduled for Wednesday, December 16 th at the City Hall Auditorium. Scheduled performances are the Ballet Folklorico, Ballroom Dancers, Green Machine Band students and student poetry readings. Mr. Cora also reported the Kermit McKenzie Jr. High School library project is scheduled to be completed during the holiday break. Maintenance staff will be busy assembling and moving in furniture. Lastly, Mr. Cora wished everyone a happy holiday season. In Mrs. Arriola s absence, Mr. Cora relayed her message of wishing everyone happy holidays. Administrative Reports Board acknowledged receipt of the Administrative Reports. Mrs. Alma Wilson, Family Services Coordinator, Mr. Sam Duarte, Parent Engagement Coordinator, Mrs. Margarita Aguirre, Administrative Assistant, Mr. Tony Baro, Caseworker, Mr. Judith Gonzalez, Caseworker, and Mrs. Florene Bednersch, THRIVE Guadalupe each presented an overview and summary of the services they provide to families in the community. Mrs. Wilson reported 23 parents completed the Parent Academy Classes which include sections in Health Nutrition, Leadership, Educational Growth and Parenting. Eight of the parent graduates were present to receive their diploma of completion. At this time, Page - 3 -
Mrs. Wilson along with her staff presented each of the parents with their diplomas. Mrs. Wilson also announced most of the parents who attended the academy have returned back to school to complete their GED requirements. Graduates are: Eva Cedillo, Margarita Salazar, Maria DeLaCruz, Jovita Garcia, Iliana Andrades, Reyna Chavez, Karen Maciel, and Maria DeLaPaz. Mr. Cora and the Board congratulated all of the parent participants and thanked Mrs. Wilson and all of the staff at the Family Services Center for all they do for our parents and students. Mr. Cora also congratulated Mr. Matt Dwyer, Director of Food Serviced for acquiring their new vehicle and thanked the administrative team for all they do. Board Reports Ms. Baro reported she was happy to be at the taping of the Ellen Show for the unveiling of the Mary Buren Library renovation project. Mrs. Sabedra-Cuello mentioned its great seeing all of the positive news. So many great things are happening at Mary Buren Elementary. Glad to see Mary Buren is now an AVID School. Looking forward to the Gala Night and see the return of the Green Machine. Mrs. Sabedra-Cuello also congratulated Mr. Dwyer on completing his state compliance review. She wished everyone happy holidays. Mrs. Cepeda reported she was also present for the taping of the Ellen show. It was great to see the students that were present for the unveiling. Mrs. Michaud reported she attended the CSBA Conference last week. It is great to see the new learning center and the Green Machine back again. Mrs. Michaud wished everyone happy holidays. Action Items Library Dedication/Naming Motion was made by Ms. Baro, seconded by Mrs. Cepeda and carried to approve the dedication and naming the Mary Buren Elementary School library as per Board Policy 7511 to The Ellen DeGeneres Show Learning Center, as presented. Absent: One - Arriola Resolution 2015/2016-05 Roll Call was taken for the approval and adoption of Resolution 2015/2016-05; Resolution of the Governing Board Delegation of Governing Board Powers/Duties, as presented. Gifts Motion was made by Mrs. Cepeda, seconded by Mrs. Sabedra- Cuello and carried to acknowledge and accept the donation/grant of $3500 from the Patterson Family Foundation for the renovation of the Mary Buren Elementary School Library. Consulting Services Motion was made by Mrs. Cepeda, seconded by Mrs. Sabedra- Cuello and carried to approve the Agreement for Consulting Services between the Guadalupe Union School District and Dolinka Group LLC, as presented. Resolution 2015/2016-06 Roll Call was taken for the approval and adoption of Resolution 2015/2016-06; Resolution for Notice of Completion Mary Buren Elementary School Play Field, as presented. First Interim Prior to Board action, Mrs. Kim Greer, CBO presented a summary of the First Interim Report for 2015/2016 and current budget status. Page - 5 -

General Functions Motion was made by Mrs. Sabedra-Cuello, seconded by Ms. Baro and carried to certify that the Guadalupe Union School District will be able to meet its financial obligations for 2015/2016 fiscal year and two subsequent years provided that the district makes the required budget adjustments as per the multi-year projection included in the budget documents.
