More than 100 delegates and members were present, including several representatives of the EARIE Executive Committee and Past Presidents. The President called the meeting to order at 6:15 p.m. by welcoming the EARIE members attending the 38 th EARIE Annual Conference in Stockholm, Sweden and thanked those who were present at the General Assembly for their valued participation in this important EARIE business meeting. MINUTES 1. Approval of the Minutes of the EARIE General Assembly held in Istanbul, Turkey, on 3 rd September 2010 The President asked if there were any comments on or final revisions to be made to the 2010 General Assembly Minutes. (The link to the document had been circulated via e-mail to the current EARIE membership along with the GA announcement.) No remarks were made. The Minutes were unanimously approved. [NOTE: The Minutes of recent EARIE General Assemblies are readily available online on the EARIE website (www.earie.org) under the Governance menu.] 2. Approval of the Accounts 2010 The Accounts 2010 (which had been duly circulated to the EARIE membership prior to the GA meeting) were reviewed by the President. He noted that EARIE remains in a good financial situation and continues to be fairly stable in terms of income, expenditures and surplus. The financial situation has changed mainly due to an increase in the contribution to EIASM + VAT, combined with a lower annual membership (about 100 EARIE members less in 2010 than in 2009), resulting in a lower overall surplus (but still above the break-even point). The President asked whether there were any further questions regarding the 2010 Accounts. No questions were asked and no remarks were made. The President asked the General Assembly for a show of hands to approve the accounts. The final 2010 Accounts for EARIE were unanimously approved. 3. Membership Situation The President reviewed the membership numbers over the past decade. Given his own background, he was very pleased to see that Portugal has made it to the top ten countries! The following membership figures were presented on a slide: Total number of members Top 10 countries in 2011 2011 452 members (to date) 2010 466 members 2009 568 members 2008 553 members 2007 487 members 2006 481 members 2005 451 members 2004 528 members 2003 519 members 2002 496 members 1. 4. Results of Elections 2010 President Cabral announced the results of the electronic elections held in 2011 for a President Elect and three new Administrators (for a 3-year term, renewable once). The newly-elected officers will take office immediately after the closure of the 2011 EARIE General Assembly in Stockholm. President Cabral was pleased to announce the successful nomination of the next EARIE President for the next three years (2011-2014) a 3-year term as per the new Statutes: Patrick REY Toulouse School of Economics, France The newly-elected Administrators for the next three years (2011-2014) are: Estelle CANTILLON Brussels Free University, Belgium Martin PEITZ University of Mannheim, Germany Helder VASCONCELOS Catholic University of Porto, Portugal The President welcomed the new President-Elect and Administrators to the EARIE Executive Committee and thanked them in advance for their support and commitment to the Association. The following three Administrators will be leaving the EARIE Executive Committee after the Stockholm General Assembly since their two consecutive 3-year terms will have ended: António BRANDÃO University of Porto, Portugal Thomas GEHRIG University of Vienna, Austria Marco HAAN University of Groningen, Netherlands On behalf of the Association, the President thanked these members for their work as EARIE Administrators over the past 6 years. Although he quickly moved past the next slide, the outgoing EARIE President nonetheless received a round of applause from those present, thanking him for his service to the cause: Luís M. B. CABRAL IESE Business School, USA & Spain The President announced that the next EARIE elections will be held in 2012 for several new Administrators. Any suggestions for suitable candidates should be forwarded directly to him or the President-Elect and would be most welcome! Electronic ballots will be distributed to all current EARIE members via e-mail in due course. He warmly thanked the membership for their active participation in their Association by taking the time to cast their votes each year this is important for the future of EARIE! 5. Report on the EARIE Conference 2011 The President reviewed the two-tiered system currently being used for the EARIE Annual Conferences: as the hosts, the Conference Chairs along with their Local Organizing Committee take charge of the venue, session rooms, registration, social events and all related logistics for the event whereas each year EARIE appoints a suitable Scientific Committee Chair who is responsible for handling the paper submissions, reviewing process plus referees, and preparing the academic program thereby dividing the workload, and ensuring a successful academic and networking event for professionals and practitioners in the field of Industrial Economics. Marcus Asplund gave a short presentation on EARIE 2011. The 38th EARIE Annual Conference was hosted by the Royal Institute of Technology (September 1-2) and the Stockholm School of Economics (September 3). The Local Organizing Committee consists of Marcus Asplund (Chair Royal Institute of Technology), Mats Bergman (Södertörn University), Richard Friberg (Stockholm School of Economics), and Lars Persson (Research Institute for Industrial Economics) along with a host of energetic volunteers! The EARIE 2011 registration logistics, etc. are being managed by MCI Sweden (Carola Skoog and Isha Hauradhun); WebMeets.com provided the paper submission / reviewing system and support, thanks to Robert Clark. Of the 667 papers submitted, 391 were accepted, resulting in 328 presentations and 105 sessions with 36 countries represented. Approx. 380 delegates are attending EARIE 2011. EARIE General Assembly Stockholm, Sweden 3 rd September 2011 Page 3

On behalf of EARIE, Luís Cabral thanked Marcus Asplund, Chair of the EARIE 2011 Local Organizing Committee, and his efficient team for hosting this year s conference in Stockholm. 6. Young Economists Essay Awards (YEEAs) The President invited Martin Peitz, Chair of the EARIE 2011 Scientific Committee, to say a few words. Martin briefly reviewed the procedures used to select the conference papers as well as the best conference papers written by young economists. He thanked his team of Referees for their professionalism and diligence in reading and reviewing the submissions. The Scientific Committee made a first selection of the top papers (from amongst the papers with the best rankings) and the final selection was made with the input of the EARIE President. Thanks to the generous support of EARIE and the EARIE 2011 Local Organizing Committee (chaired by Marcus Asplund), 2 YEEA prizes of 1000 each (plus certificates) were handed out in Stockholm this year. One of these has been subtitled the 6 th EARIE Paul Geroski Prize (for the most significant policy contribution). The President was invited to present the 2 YEEA winners during the Conference Dinner (held at the Vasa Museum yesterday evening). EARIE 2011 YEEA Winners: Fabian Herweg (University of Munich) & Konrad Mierendorff (University of Zurich) Uncertain Demand, Consumer Loss Aversion, and Flat-Rate Tariffs. Yuya Takahashi (University of Mannheim) Estimating a War of Attrition: The Case of the US Movie Theater Industry. [The 6th EARIE Paul Geroski Prize for the most significant policy contribution.] YEEA 2011 Selection Committee: Luís Cabral, Guillermo Caruana, Juanjo Ganuza, Michelle Goeree, Martin Peitz (Chair), Philipp Schmidt-Dengler, Frank Verboven. The President thanked Martin Peitz and his team as well as the Stockholm organizers for their excellent work on the EARIE 2011 Program. He is pleased with the quality of this year s papers and hoped that the delegates also found the conference interesting and worthwhile. 7. IJIO On behalf of Neil Gandal and the other IJIO Editors, Bernard Caillaud and Justine Hastings, the President briefed the membership on the IJIO Report to the EARIE Executive Committee. He remarked that this year the IJIO team has had a significant change in the Editorial Board since Pat Bajari stepped down after 6 years and Justine Hastings was selected as a new Managing Editor. There has also been a big turnover in Co-Editors. The EAB now includes several EARIE members. The IJIO team is pleased with the current situation and looks forward to working with young editors and others who will contribute to the success of the IJIO by keeping it going and growing stronger year by year. In 2010, the IJIO had a grand total of 538 submissions (over 40 more than in 2009). A similar submission rate in 2011 is expected. There were 3,173 submissions between January 2005 and July 2011. The summary statistics for the 2010 submissions are: Rejected at Initial Review 57% Acceptance Rate 12% On behalf of the IJIO Editors, President Luís Cabral announced the winners of the IJIO Paul Geroski Best Article Prize for the best papers published in the IJIO in 2010: Juan Esteban Carranza Product innovation and adoption in market equilibrium: The case of digital cameras. Future Conferences The 39th EARIE Annual Conference is scheduled for 2-4 September 2012, hosted by the Faculty of Economics of the Università di Roma Tor Vergata (UTV). The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) includes Tommaso Valetti (Chair), Alberto Iozzi, Gustavo Piga, and Giancarlo Spagnolo. The 2012 Scientific Committee Chair is yet to be determined by EARIE. Note that to avoid a conflict with another major conference being held in Spain the week before, next year s conference will be held from Sunday to Tuesday (rather than Thursday to Saturday). The President summarized the situation regarding the few proposals received for hosting EARIE 2013 and future EARIE conferences. He appealed to the membership to get involved! Please contact the President with any suggestions or expressions of interest for hosting a future EARIE Annual Conference. 9. Other Business The President announced that as changes to the EARIE Statutes were being proposed, there had in fact been a brief special General Assembly called the day before (2 nd September 2011) and as there were enough members present for quorum (approximately 120), the proposed modifications (which had been circulated to the membership and posted on the EARIE website) have been duly approved. President Cabral gave an overall summary of these modifications. In addition to some small textual modifications and officially adding two new posts to the EARIE Executive Committee as announced last year (i.e., a Past President and a President- Elect), it is also proposed that the term of the EARIE President be extended from two to three years to further ensure continuity and stability for the future of the Association. Given that the Executive Committee typically meets only once per year, this additional year for the EARIE President will strengthen the leadership aspect. The one to two-year overlap of the President- Elect and the President will also play a key factor, as well as acknowledging the importance from a historical perspective of including the most recent Past President on the Executive Committee. President Cabral asked the membership to vote on this additional modification. It was unanimously agreed that the term of the EARIE President be extended from two years to three, beginning with President Patrick Rey (2011-2014). Finally, it was decided at the last Executive Committee meeting to increase the current limit of Administrators representing the same country on the Executive Committee from two to three thereby allowing for more flexibility and widening the pool of potential candidates for available Administrator slots in a given year. The President asked for approval of this new higher limit. It was unanimously agreed that the new Statutes include an increase in the number of Administrators allowed from any given country, from two to three. The President expressed appreciation for the positive response and support of those members present. He asked whether there were any other comments or concerns. No further issues or questions were raised. He thanked the members who attended this General Assembly for their time and participation, and warmly invited them to attend EARIE 2012 in Rome next year. The General Assembly meeting was adjourned at 6:30 p.m. ***** EARIE General Assembly Stockholm, Sweden 3 rd September 2011 Page 5
