CURRICULUM VITAE Joshua M. Kivuva, Ph.D. 4810 Amsterdam Street Pittsburgh, PA, 15206 Tel. 412 417 4767 (C) 412 665 8246 (H) E-mail joshuakivuva@hotmail.com joshua.kivuva@uonbi.ac.ke skype: Joshua.kivuva1 KEY QUALIFICATIONS I am a FULBRIGHT scholar, a political scientist and a tenured professor, Department of Political Science, University of Nairobi (UoN), one of Africa s leading universities. I hold the position of Senior Lecturer and I ve a joint appointment as Research Fellow with the Institute for Development Studies (IDS). I am also a policy expert and consulted for several government Ministries and Departments, Kenya s Development Partners and civil society organizations (CSOs). The University of Nairobi, where I have worked for over 15 years, was ranked position 8 in Africa and 775 in the world in the just released edition of Webometrics Ranking, January 2017. Similarly, the Institute for Development Studies (IDS), University of Nairobi (established in 1965), is one of the oldest of 20 such institutes in the world and has been home to several Nobel Laureates and world-renowned scholars: including James Tobin, winner of Nobel Prize in Economics (1981): Joseph Stiglitz, Winner of Nobel Prize in Economics (2000); Michael Todaro, the development economist who authored the Todaro Migration Model, James Coleman, a world-renowned socialist and Prof. Charles Okidi, the first African recipient of the Elizabeth Haub Prize in Environmental law (1984), the highest Global award in environmental law. Many other international scholars started and built their academic careers at the IDS. I am currently (September-June 2018) a Visiting Scholar at the African Studies Program, University of Pittsburgh, where I am teaching courses on African Politics and the Model African Union. I am also faculty/visiting Scholar at the Kenya School of Government s MPPA program for Public Servants; Kenya s National Intelligence Academy s MPPA program for security, military and intelligence officers; and, Kenyatta University s MPPA and MPA programs. I am an External Examiner for Karatina University s School of Education and Social Sciences. I have been instrumental in establishing key partnerships and sourcing for grants. I was instrumental in the establishment of partnership with the Kenya School of Government (KSG) and the State University of New York (SUNY) to build capacity for Kenya s devolved system; and, recently with the Partnership for African Social Governance and Research to start a research oriented methodology MA program at the Department of Political Science, UoN. I have written several research proposals that have been funded. I am one of the four Principal Researchers that conduct Afrobarometer studies in Kenya and the Eastern Africa region. I am a member of the UoN s UNESCO UNTWIN Chair and currently are raising funds for Round Two activities. 1

I have held several responsibilities both in the Faculty of Arts and the Department of Political Science. Currently, I am a Faculty Board Member for Examinations and Curriculum committees. I also chair the Department of Political Science Training Committee. I have been Chair of the Department s Post-graduate Studies Committee (2008-12), Curriculum Committee (2014-2016) and, Examinations Committee (2010-11). As Chair of the Postgraduate Studies Committee, I oversaw the recruitment, admission and management of students to the following five programs: MA Political Science, MA Public Administration and MA International Relations (University of Nairobi); MPPA at the KSG; and, MA in Security Studies (Kenya National Intelligence Academy). I also sat in student disciplinary committees and reviewed several university policies. In IDS, I have been manager for several research projects, including Afrobarometer surveys, where I have supervised field-workers, including their payments as well as managing research grants. I have held non-tenure positions at the University of Pittsburgh and the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. I have for years taught at the St. Lawrence University, Nairobi Campus, where twice a year American undergraduate students spend a whole semester abroad. I have taught exchange students at the University of Nairobi (from Japan, USA and Europe). At the KSG, I teach students from all over Africa, including officials of the Somali and Southern Sudanese government. I have worked with students and refugees both in Kenya and the US. From 2000-2007, I was a Refugee Advocate working with the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council and the Pittsburgh School District to ensure that the large refugee groups resettled in the Pittsburgh area acculturated well and were provided with culturally appropriate education. Working with policy makers, community groups, area churches and area hospitals and schools, I acted as a cultural ambassador to both refugees and host communities.
