ONGOING RESEARCH Under Advance Contract Political Parties and Democracy in the American South. University of Chicago Press (with John H. Aldrich). We contend that democratic politics is created and sustained in the competition that occurs between parties and in the information and incentives that this competition promotes. Using the American South as our case, we focus on three periods of party competition: 4
1828-48, 1878-1898, and 1948-2008. In each period, we compare the South and Nonsouth on four dimensions: the role of parties in elections, party organization, parties in government, and the responsiveness of the political system. We conclude by describing the convergence of democracy in the South with the rest of the country in the late 20 th Century. Under Review Party Polarization and Representation. (with Brian Newman and David Nickerson). Work in Progress The Politics of Participation. (with Carl Palmer). Standard models of political participation emphasize the role of factors largely external to politics, such as socioeconomic status and personal characteristics, but political activity also has its roots in political issues and conflicts. What are the characteristics of citizens reactions to policy outcomes and the differential effects of these reactions on participation?
