Overview: Among the 7,000,000 items in the library s collections are Francis Scott Key s original manuscript of The Star-Spangled Banner, papers of Maryland s colonial governors and signers of the Declaration of Independence, over 700,000 photographs, and extensive genealogical resources. The library maintains an extraordinary collection of books, journals, manuscripts, newspapers, maps, prints, obsolete currency, oral histories, ephemera, and microfilm reflecting the history of Maryland and its people. MdHS strives to make its collections even more accessible through online resources that include more than 6,000 photographs and detailed finding aids. BUSINESS HISTORY IN THE UNITED STATES 169

Noteworthy collections: The Baltimore Equitable Society Collection, MS 3020 (1729 1996). 400 boxes, 198 oversized vols., 300 lin. ft. Collection encompasses over 200 years of the company s history divided into four principal series: Insurance Records are those directly involved in writing policies, managing risk, and paying losses. Financial Records reflect accounting, banking, and investment activities. Administrative Papers include minutes, correspondence, and other documents generated by the society s officers and directors. Also included are numerous personal business records of many of the society s officers. Museum Records and Collections consist of publications, manuscripts, prints, and photos relating to fire fighting and fire insurance, as well as extensive correspondence relating mostly to the provenance of the collections. As the records of a mutual fire insurance company, the collection s heart is the policies issued between 1794 1991 for properties in and around Baltimore City. Indexes are fragmentary but include a street index, primarily for 1865 1972, and name indexes. Maryland World War II Records, MS 2010 (1945 1965). Ca. 300 ft. and 3 microfilms. Materials collected by the WW II Records Division of the MHS, 1945 65; include c. 237,000 carbon copies of separations from service of MD veterans; statements, questionnaires, and newspaper clippings relative to MD s military, industrial and agricultural contributions to war effort as well as civilian defense services and home front volunteer activities. Eighteen filing cabinets, totaling c. 300 feet of records. Lloyd Family Papers, MS 2001 (1658 1910). Ca. 30,000 items. Divided into Land Papers, Letters, and Business Material of the Lloyd family. These include 134 distinct archival collections concerning civic organizations, the built environment, and public and nonprofit agencies. Added to these are scores of oral histories, photographs, architectural plans, and the papers of prominent Baltimore citizens. Noteworthy collections: Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Baltimore, Collection (1964 1975). Bakery, Confectionery and Tobacco Workers International Union Archives (1888 1982). 147.25 lin. ft. Founded in 1886 as the National Union of Journeymen Bakers of North America, united with confectioners in 1902, and merged with Tobacco Workers International Union in 1978. Documentation of union operations at the national and local levels, including correspondence, financial records, publications, legal files, contract negotiations and agreements, and organizers reports. Industrial Union of Marine and Shipbuilding Workers of America (IUMSWA) Archives (1934 1970). 188.75 lin. ft. Formed in 1934 to unite all shipyard workers, regardless of trade/craft or level of skill. Records include extensive documentation of locals activities and contracts, national administration, organizing efforts, negotiations, conventions, National Labor Relations Board and National War Labor Board cases, actions taken to stabilize the shipbuilding industry, and relationships with other unions. 172 GHI REFERENCE GUIDE 25

Founded in 1929 to foster development of business and professional women throughout MD. Concerns addressed by the federation and documented in their records include expanding the role of women in business and the professions and recognizing women s achievements. National Organizers Alliance Archives (1991 2004). 48 lin. ft. and 2 mapcase drawers. Founded in 1993 by organizers working across the spectrum of progressive social justice movements, the NOA has a twofold purpose: to advance progressive organizing for social, economic and environmental justice, and to sustain, support, and nurture the people of all ages who do it. Contains working papers documenting the activities of the organization, including regional organizing, meeting notes, membership information, video and audio tapes, photographs, and posters. Also documented are recruitment efforts among minority groups, including African Americans and immigrants. Andrew Pettis Papers (1924 1972). 23.5 lin. ft. Former president of the Industrial Union of Marine and Shipbuilding Workers of America who worked his way up through the ranks to positions in the union s national leadership. Papers include grievance files, shop steward reports, organizers reports, conference proceedings, union publications, and photographs. Tobacco Workers International Union (TWIU) Archives (1896 1979). 136 lin. ft. Founded in 1885 as the National Tobacco Workers Union of America and merged with the Bakery and Confectionery Workers International Union in 1979. Records include administrative files, organizers correspondence and reports, documentation of locals activities, financial records, and publications. United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners (UBCJ) Archives (1840 2000). 643.5 lin. ft. Founded in 1881 as the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and affiliated with the United Order of American Carpenters and Joiners in 1888. Records include administrative files, correspondence and writings of UBC leaders, convention proceedings, publications, locals charters, photographs, films, and artifacts. Work Projects Administration in Maryland Archives (1933 1943). 20 lin. ft., 50 reels microfilm. Documentation of construction, recreation, local history, and arts projects undertaken by the Works Projects Administration in Maryland. Administrative files, local history research materials, and extensive photographic records. Maryland State Grange of the Patrons of Husbandry Archives (1873 2000). 17 lin. ft. The first grange in Maryland was established in 1873 as an organization which supported agriculture and causes affecting agriculture. The Patrons of Husbandry especially encouraged participation in youth granges. Maryland Horse Breeders Association Archives (1929 1979). 18 lin. ft. Founded in 1929 with the goals of promoting, protecting, and educating the Maryland horse industry. The association has sought to accomplish these objectives primarily through Maryland Horse, a publication which began as a newsletter in 1936 and has since grown into a popular full-length magazine. The MHBA archives cover such subjects as horse sales, shows, and racing; registration of Maryland-bred horses; Maryland fund bonus payments; and the syndication of stallions. Cuba Company Archives (1894 1960). 273.5 lin. ft. This business firm, active in pre-castro Cuba, was involved in railroad construction and operation, among other enterprises. Records relating to railroading appear throughout this extensive collection including the president s correspondence; financial records; land records; blueprints; maps, plats, and land lots; and photographs. 174 GHI REFERENCE GUIDE 25
