The Manifest December, 2012 Official Publication of the Southern Oregon Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society P.O. Box 622 Medford, Oregon 97501 soc-nrhs.org 2012 Rogue Valley Railroad Show Highlights By: Allen Dobney, Photos by: Victoria Law, Allen Dobney Even though the show was a lot of work, everyone seemed to have a great time. We also did very well from the sales standpoint. With a lot of books, VHS tapes and magazines, plus t-shirts and golden spikes we netted $769.55 at our show table. Below are a few pictures of our members and show guests in action: This railroad history display was jointly developed by the Amy Drake of the Southern Oregon Historical Society, Victoria Law of the Ashland Railroad Museum and yours truly of our chapter. It took 5 of us about 2 ½ hours to set up. It was well received by show guests. After about 9 hours of display setup on Friday, I needed Larry Tuttle to adjust a few loose screws. Jerry Hellinga is doing a final inspection of our show displays before the doors opened on Saturday. Ric Aubin, Tony Johnson & Larry Tuttle are discussing the fine points of selling books and magazines. It must have worked well, we sold a lot of both!!! 1

Claude Sorensen and Dan Wilkinson discussing book and magazine sales with customers. Art McKee Setting up the O scale switching layout for Sunday s opening. Richard & Barbara next to their awesome Sleepy Hallow Railway passenger car. Sid Stoner taking a coffee brake next to his beautiful speeder. 2

As you can see from the above summary, the response from the Butte Falls community was overwhelmingly positive. Our next step in this project is to meet with the Butte Falls Mayor and City Council to discuss an operating relationship between our chapter and the city and plan next steps to keep the project going. 3

A BIG THANKS By: Allen Dobney, Photos by: Tony Johnson, Charlie Walch, Larry Tuttle, Allen Dobney I just wanted to say THANK YOU to all of our members who donated their time to make our 14 days of open houses to the public in 2012 a big success. Bellow is a collage of pictures of many of you working hard and our guests having a fun time at the Railroad Park this last summer: 4

Medco #4 Restoration Jerry Hellinga Fund Raising: The matching funds offer ended on November 1st. A total of $4,867.50 in qualifying individual donations were received since the fund raising campaign was kicked off this spring. $3,831 from Chapter members, $750 from non-members, and $261.50 in cash donations from Railroad park run days and other events. The matching funds check of $4,900 will be presented at the November Membership meeting. There was also a challenge grant of $1,000 offered if at least 25 members donated a minimum of $20 each. This offer also expired on November 1st. Since only eleven members donated since the current fund raising effort was kicked off 6 months ago, we will not receive this additional $1,000. Work Progress: Work continues on the boiler to prepare it for mating with the locomotive chassis. Most of the time has been spent clearing the tell tale holes in the staybolts. So far 16 staybolts have been found to have drill bits broken off in them from previous attempts to clear them Chelatchie Boiler is trying to develop a method to remove these broken drill bits. Once all the tell tales have been cleared, the boiler will be filled with water and pressure tested one more time before reassembly to the frame. b. Payment; since we're accommodating him on his schedule and he's a fan of the train clubs, that four comp tickets for him and his family to the RR Show would be adequate. i. It was presumed that this is the brush and blackberry covered hillside going down to Bear Creek. Jerry Hellinga talked about the tour he and other chapter members gave to Terramai management and family of our equipment in White City. Terramai, a company specializing in reprocessing wood for reuse < http://www.terramai.com/>, is the new owner of the Burrill Lumber mill site where we ve been storing our rolling stock.
