Big Idea Card Big Ideas of the Lesson 6, Unit 1 One important pattern of migration is urbanization, or the movement of people from rural to urban areas. The pace of urbanization on Earth has accelerated over time. At the present time over half of the world s population lives in urban areas. Urbanization offers the opportunity to deliver important services like water, electricity, education, and health care in more efficient ways. Urbanization also comes with problems such as air pollution, traffic congestion, slums, poverty, and lack of green space. Michigan Citizenship Collaborative Curriculum Page 2 of 17

Word Cards 28 urbanization the movement of people from rural to urban areas Example: Urbanization has resulted in the fact that over half the people in the world now live in urban areas. (SS060307) 29 megacity a city with over 10 million people Example: The number of megacities on the Earth is steadily growing. (SS060307) 30 slum a run-down area of a city with inadequate housing and lack of services such as water and sanitation Example: Slums have become a part of many, many large cities on Earth.
