How the EU works The EU is a unique economic and political partnership between 28 European countries that together cover much of the continent. The EU was created in the aftermath of the Second World War. The first steps were to foster economic cooperation: the idea being that countries who trade with one another become economically interdependent and so more likely to avoid conflict. The result was the European Economic Community (EEC), created in 1958, and initially increasing economic cooperation between six countries: Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Since then, a huge single market has been created and continues to develop towards its full potential. European Union Migration and Asylum Migration has rapidly gained momentum in EU external policy. Aid programmes and tools aim, through a balanced approach, to enhance the management of legal migration, curb illegal flows and boost the effects of migration on development. Regarding asylum, the EU focuses on building capacities and promoting durable solutions. A Global Approach to Migration and Mobility, addressing four areas: organizing and facilitating legal migration and mobility, preventing and reducing irregular migration and trafficking in human beings, promoting international protection and asylum and maximising the development impact of migration and mobility. Migration is now an integral part of a number of national and regional development strategies. Several partner countries and regions have been given support to develop and implement their own migration strategies, to gather and analyse migration data through the development of Migration Profiles, and to build up the capacity of the relevant institutions. In the field of asylum, the EU aims at enhancing the protection capacity in regions of origin and transit and orientates its assistance to them in view of fostering durable solutions. AUSTRIA Migration is one of the policy areas where the EU is committed to pursue policy coherence for development.
