67th St/Cesar Chavez Station Harrisburg Blvd & Cesar Chavez Blvd Mock-up of a set of three glass windscreens featuring a quote from Cesar Chavez in either Spanish or English in the central panel, and paintings of ripe crops in the two side panels. Sketch of one side of the platform, showing the variety of plants covering the station in warm and vibrant colors. These are the quotes by Cesar Chavez that I am considering for the panels. I will have to choose six of the nine shown here, so if you have a preference, please tell us. The texts will all be both in English and in Spanish at the station. 1. "We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community...our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own." 2. "When we are really honest with ourselves we must admit that our lives are all that really belong to us. So, it how we use our lives that determines what kind of men we are. It is my deepest belief that only by giving our lives do we find life." 3. "What is at stake is human dignity. If a man is not accorded respect he cannot respect himself and if he does not respect himself, he cannot demand it." 4. "It is not enough to teach our young people to be successful...so they can realize their ambitions, so they can earn good livings, so they can accumulate the material things that this society bestows. Those are worthwhile goals. But it is not enough to progress as individuals while our friends and neighbors are left behind." 5. "Perhaps we can bring the day when children will learn from their earliest days that being fully man and fully woman means to give one's life to the liberation of the brother who suffers. It is up to each one of us. It won't happen unless we decide to use our lives to show the way." 6. "We are convinced that non-violence is more powerful than violence. We are convinced that non-violence supports you if you have a just and moral cause...if you use violence, you have to sell part of yourself for that violence. Then you are no longer a master of your own struggle." 7. "In the final analysis it doesn't really matter what the political system is...we don't need perfect political systems; we need perfect participation." 8. "We can choose to use our lives for others to bring about a better and more just world for our children. People who make that choice will know hardship and sacrifice. But if you give yourself totally to the non-violence struggle for peace and justice you also find that people give you their hearts and you will never go hungry and never be alone. And in giving of yourself you will discover a whole new life full of meaning and love." 9. "I am convinced that the truest act of courage, the strongest act of manliness is to sacrifice ourselves for others in a totally non-violent struggle for justice."
