WOMEN & THE LAW Minutes of Meeting Wednesday, October 3, 2012 IN ATTENDANCE: Chris Demsey, Christie Di Guglielmo, Laina Herbert, Maggie Juliano, Betsy McGeever, Pam Meitner, Molly Shaw, Kate Lester (by phone), Kathy Miller (by phone) I. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A motion was made to approve the minutes of the September 5, 2012 meeting. The motion was seconded and carried with all in favor of the motion. II. EMMANUEL DINING ROOM The Section has committed to serve lunch at the Emmanuel Dining Room East (Walnut Street location) on October 9 each year. The Section has several volunteers for this month s service, but more are welcome. III. GRACE COTTAGE The next Grace Cottage visit is scheduled for October 25, 2012 at 5:30 p.m. Members are encouraged to attend, and reminded to RSVP to Nicole Freiler (Nicole.freiler@state.de.us) so that she can order enough pizza for everyone. IV. DELAWARE LAW REVIEW The Delaware Law Review has requested submissions from the sections of the DSBA. The section solicited volunteers and topic ideas. Maggie Juliano will serve as the section s liaison to the Delaware Law Review. She will draft the first submission for the section, on the topic of Title IX. Claire De Matteis will draft a submission regarding the history and current landscape of women judges, law firm leaders, corporate directors, and candidates for elected office in Delaware. V. BAR JOURNAL The Section is one of the most active sections of the DSBA; efforts should be made to report more frequently on the Section s activities and accomplishments. A submission will be made to the Bar Journal reporting on the Title IX talk, shackling legislation, and Ladies Night Out. VI. LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE Members are reminded that the Section s activities supporting or opposing legislation must proceed through the executive committee process. The DSBA has retained lobbyists who #526335

will take approved action with the General Assembly with respect to legislative matters that have gone through appropriate channels. Dates (Feb. 1, 8, 15, 22) for the annual legislative luncheon are being considered. The lunch will be held at the new DSBA headquarters. Paper invitations will be sent to legislators on or about November 15. Replies will be due by January 15. Thank you notes were sent on behalf of the Section to approximately twelve legislators to thank them for their leadership and hard work on the shackling legislation. Judge Del Pesco will be asked to speak briefly at the luncheon about the legislation and to recognize those legislators who worked on it. VII. LADIES NIGHT OUT Ladies Night Out is scheduled for November 14, 2012 at the home of Karen Jacobs Louden. This event is in lieu of a November meeting. The Section will provide food; those who plan to attend who would like to bring something may bring wine, beer, or other beverages. VIII. ALTERNATIVE WORK SCHEDULE COMMITTEE The committee is considering development of an anonymous survey of members of the bar relating to alternative work schedule issues. After data is gathered (perhaps in March or April), the Section will host an informal brown bag lunch to discuss the results and people s experiences (perhaps in April or May). IX. TITLE IX LECTURE On October 30, the Section is sponsoring a lecture by Professor Ann Juliano from Villanova School of Law in honor of the fortieth anniversary of Title IX. Richards, Layton & Finger is hosting. Attendance is free for those wishing to attend without CLE credit; admission is $45 if CLE credit is desired. Registration is through the DSBA. X. RETREAT Retreat dates under consideration are Mar. 8-9, 2013 and Apr. 5-6, 2013. The retreat committee will hold a teleconference next week to discuss potential topics for the CLE sessions. Topics under consideration include networking for women and how the practice of law has changed with respect to the ability to work flexibly. XI. OTHER DISCUSSION Members were encouraged to attend the Office and Trial Practice CLE. Justice Antonin Scalia will be the featured speaker, and the bar would like a strong turnout. Emily Joseph and Betsy McGeever are working on updating the Section s bylaws. The meeting was adjourned at 1:22 p.m. The next meeting is December 5, 2012, at 12:30 p.m. #526335 2
