August 12, 2008 The Board of Education of Community Unit School District Number Two met at 7:00 P.M., on Tuesday, August 12, 2008, in the Board of Education and Administrative Offices, 1701 Charleston Avenue, Mattoon, Illinois. The meeting was called to order by Board Vice President Michelle Skinlo. PUBLIC HEARING FOR THE 2008-2009 BUDGET FOR MATTOON C.U.S.D. #2: The 2008-2009 tentative budget for Mattoon C.U.S.D. #2 was presented to the Board at the regular meeting on July 8, 2008, and a budget hearing was established for the regular August meeting of the Board. However, due to the ongoing state budget woes in Springfield, administration recommended the Board postpone the August public hearing date and approval of the 2008-09 budget for Mattoon C.U.S.D. #2 and approve the establishment of a new budget hearing date for G:\administrators\MINUTES\Aug12-08.doc Page 2 of 5
September 9, 2008 in hopes that the district will know more from Springfield. Morris moved, seconded by Standerfer, to approve the establishment of a new budget hearing date for September 9, 2008 for Mattoon Community Unit School District No. 2 as presented. A unanimous voice vote of ayes carried the motion. ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING MHS SERVING AS HOST SITE FOR THE SEPTEMBER 25, 2008 ILLINOIS ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL BOARDS ILLINI DIVISION FALL DINNER MEETING: (Information Item): Superintendent Larry Lilly announced Mattoon High School will serve as the host site for the Illinois Association of School Boards Illini Division fall dinner meeting on September 25, 2008. Superintendent Lilly explained these meetings rotate between division member schools and provide an opportunity to share facilities with other districts and allow board members to network with other board members in the region. PRESENTATION OF 2007-2008 HOPE WORKSHOP SERIES: (Information Item): The Board of Education listened to a presentation regarding the year-long workshop series conducted this past year following the very successful HOPE summit. Mary Eddy of the Lumpkin Foundation and Bill Harshbarger, consultant for the Lumpkin Foundation, along with a group of teachers consisting of Billy Gherardini, Angela Owen, Laura Smith, G:\administrators\MINUTES\Aug12-08.doc Page 4 of 5
Jamie Willis, and Mike Shaffer reviewed information presented in the HOPE workshop series. Topics included in the presentation were: the HOPE Summit Goals; Summit Participant Feedback; HOPE Workshop Series, which comprised an orientation session to identify priorities and four day-long workshops for up to fifty stakeholders from district schools; the HOPE Six Principles; a Student Success Model; S.M.A.R.T. Goals; Concern-Based Adoption Model; the Process; Why is this important in Mattoon?; HOPE Founder; the Focus; Courageous Leaders; To Change the Culture; Mattoon Middle School Initiatives for 2007-08 and 2008-09; Mattoon High School Plans Pyramid of Interventions 2008-09; Why should we continue with the HOPE ideas?; Value of Education; Ships and Education. Essentially, teams of teachers from all buildings in the district were brought together to initiate conversation and discuss ways on improving teaching and learning.
