German Politics: The Wind of Change will bridge the gap between German politics and the economic success of the country despite its controversial political decisions over the years. During this session, we will look at the interaction of the largest political parties in Germany (SPD, CDU, FDP), existing political tension, and Merkel s new position as the Chancellor. We will also analyze the impact of these recent changes on the political and economic environment in the country. Panel participants will give short presentations on the issue and then debate the future of Germany given its recent political shifts. What factors have allowed the economy to continue along its path of measured growth in spite of the adversity of contradictory policy decisions and an uncertain political atmosphere? This and many other questions will be examined during an interactive Q&A session. Join us for this breakout to examine the true underlying principles of politics and their diverse effects on the economic, social and cultural aspects of one of the European Union's largest economies.
This breakout session, entitled Down the Road: Turkey s Ascension?, will discuss the possibility of the European Union s further expansion to the East by looking at Turkey s candidacy for EU membership. Both the historical background as well as the modern position of the country will be examined in terms of the religious, social, political, and economic implications of accession for both Turkey and the EU itself. Panel participants will give short presentations expressing their views on the issue and will then debate the future of the European Union with Turkey s membership during a Q&A session. Will current EU members and Turkey itself benefit from this venture? Will the original six ever accept a non-christian member in their community? These and many more questions will be addressed during this breakout session.
