Mumbai Terror: Ajmal `Kasab' pleads not guilty to the charges Hindu, 6 May 2009 Mumbai (PTI): Pakistani gunman Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, who unleashed terror in Mumbai last year with suspected LeT operatives, and two conspirators, on Wednesday pleaded not guilty to charges framed against them by a special court."yeh sab galat hai, mujhe kabool nahin hai" (these charges are wrong, not acceptable to me), Kasab said in his plea, adding that he wanted to face the trial.the other two accused, Faheem Ansari and Sabauddin Ahmed also pleaded not guilty to the charges, saying they too would like to go in for trial. http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/000200905061641.htm Sikhs banished by Taliban want to migrate to India Asian Age, 6 May 2009 May 5: Scores of Sikh families, banished from Pakis-tan s tribal areas by Taliban militants, want to migrate and settle in India for good, this newspaper learned."we can t say anything openly against the Taliban as we fear for our lives. What we will prefer is to migrate to India where we will have more freedom," a Sikh, a doctor by profession, told this newspaper. He added, "We have conveyed this to the Pakistan government but they have promised us that things will change and we will be secure." The Sikhs approached by this newspaper requested anonymity fearing Taliban reprisals. http://www.asianage.com/presentation/leftnavigation/news/top-story/sikhsbanished-by-taliban-want-to-migrate-to-india-.aspx 13 killed in Maoist ambush in Chhattisgarh Hindu, 11 May 2009 Raipur (IANS) Twelve policemen and a civilian were killed and six injured after 150 heavily armed Maoist guerrillas ambushed a 41-member police force in Chhattisgarh, an official said on Monday. The attack on the District Force (DF) search convoy took place in hillside Risgaon village of Dhamtari district, about 130 km from here, late Sunday. http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/000200905111777.htm Mumbai terror: Another witness identifies Kasab Hindu, 12 May 2009 Mumbai (PTI): Another witness in Mumbai terror attack case on Tuesday identified prime accused Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab in a special court and said he (Ajmal) had fired at him (the witness) and Assistant Police Inspector Tukaram Omble at Girgaum Chowpatty on November 26 last year.while Omble fell to bullets fired from AK-47 rifle by Kasab, I sustained a bullet injury in the waist, the witness API Sanjay Govilkar said in the court. http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/000200905121722.htm 12 cops die in ambush by Naxals Asian Age, 12 May 2009 May 11: Less than a week after gunning down 11 people in the Bastar region and stabbing a thana in-charge to death a day later, Naxalites late on Sunday

killed 12 policemen and a civilian and injured six in an amb-ush at Risgaon, near Dhamtari, and Kanker, 130 km from Raipur. Among those who lost their lives were 10 constables, a havaldar and a special police officer http://www.asianage.com/presentation/leftnavigation/news/top-story/12- cops-die-in-ambush-by-naxals.aspx Terror attack in Hyderabad Hindu, 19 May 2009 HYDERABAD: Unidentified gunmen fired shots at a police picket in old city killing a home guard and critically injuring another constable in Falaknuma, barely 200 yards from the police station, on the second anniversary of the bomb blast in Mecca Masjid, on Monday. The injured constable, Rajendra Prasad, is being treated at Care Hospital in Banjara Hills, while the home guard Balaswamy (24) was declared dead on arrival at the Osmania General Hospital. The unarmed policemen were on a picket duty on the Falaknuma main road on account of the second anniversary of the Masjid blast which left nine dead and another five dead in the subsequent police firing to quell violent mobs http://www.hindu.com/2009/05/19/stories/2009051950190100.htm Protect India from the debris of LTTE defeat Asian Age, 20 May 2009 By Shankar Roychowdhury One of their primary targets is likely to be Tamil Nadu, the place that is closest to Sri Lanka and one with which they are most familiar. Like the cry for "azadi" in the Kashmir Valley, a significant body of sentiment in Tamil Nadu - including some of its top political icons, resonates with the ideology of Eelam, and the state has long been perceived as a region of strategic depth for the LTTE. Preventive patrols of the Indian Navy and the Coast Guard have been deployed in the Palk Straits as part of "Operation Tasha", and a number of LTTE gun-runners and smugglers have been intercepted. This vigil will have to be further strengthened. A fairly extensive network of LTTE supporters and local proxy agents has also been developed in Tamil Nadu, which is believed to have established working relationships with other terrorist groups in this country, from peninsular India to the Northeast http://www.asianage.com/presentation/leftnavigation/opinion/opinion/protectindia-from-the-debris-of-ltte-defeat-.aspx The march of folly: Obama s four-word AfPak strategy Asian Age, 20 May 2009 By Brahma Chellaney May 20 : Now that the national election is over, Indian diplomacy will face demands to aid US President Barack Obama s strategy on Afghanistan- Pakistan (AfPak). To win greater Pakistani military cooperation on the Afghan frontier, Mr Obama is seeking New Delhi s assistance on at least two fronts border-troop reductions and a resumption of "peace" talks with Islamabad. India can assist to the extent that its own interests are safe. India has no offensively-configured troop formations along the Pakistan border, and any cut in border deployments must not provide the Pakistani military an opening to infiltrate more armed terrorists into India. New Delhi has no quarrel with

Pakistan s fledgling civilian government, but a renewed bilateral dialogue can be meaningful only if Islamabad goes beyond cosmetic measures against its military-nurtured, India-directed Punjabi terror groups, like the Lashkar-e- Tayyaba and Jaish-e-Mohammad http://www.asianage.com/presentation/leftnavigation/opinion/op-ed/themarch-of-folly-obama s-four-word-afpak-strategy.aspx 26/11: More data provided to Pakistan Hindu, 21 May 2009 NEW DELHI: India on Wednesday handed over additional information to Pakistan on the involvement of its citizens in the Mumbai terror attacks. The External Affairs Ministry handed over to a diplomat of the Pakistan High Commission the details sought by Islamabad, official sources confirmed. The information consisted of the confessional statement of the lone surviving gunman, Ajmal Amir Kasab and DNA samples of all the terrorists. Pakistan had complained that one of the DNA samples was a duplicate. India acknowledged the clerical error and sent fresh samples. http://www.hindu.com/2009/05/21/stories/2009052157350100.htm New govt ready with National Counter Terrorism Centre Indian Express, 21 May 2009 Days before he takes charge for his second term in office, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has had his staff prepare a roadmap to overhaul and modernise internal security mechanisms, the key element of which is the setting up of a National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) like in most developed countries. Known in government circles as the 100-day internal security plan, the document, prepared by National Security Advisor M K Narayanan, aims to create a National Network Security Architecture to address a gamut of shortcomings that plague the internal security structure of the country 26/11: prosecution seeks to include Kashmir Hindu, 22 May 2009 Mumbai: The prosecution in the Mumbai terror attacks case moved an application in court on hursday asking for the inclusion of the objective of capturing Kashmir in the final charges. The charges in the case were framed on May 6. The move by Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam comes a day after media reports indicated that there was no reference to Kashmir in the final charges, whereas the prosecution had mentioned it while proposing the charges http://www.hindu.com/2009/05/22/stories/2009052260701200.htm 16 Maha cops die in Naxal ambush Asian Age, 22 May 2009 May 21: In the second major attack by Naxalites in Maharashtra in the past

three months, 16 police personnel five of them women were killed in a firing ambush on a highway at Dhanora Taluka, Gadchiroli district, on Thursday. On February 1, 15 policemen were killed in the region in a similar attack. The dead included an inspector and a sub-inspector. Hundreds of Naxals surrounded a police party on a highway leading to Chhattisgarh which they had blocked with tree trunks. They used sophisticated weapons to target the police, who were completely outnumbered and outgunned. The Naxals then fled with police weapons. The inspector in charge of Dhanora police station, Ashok Ayangar, and sub-inspector Shan-taram Ghorpade were killed. Mines were used the blast police vehicles. The Naxalites had called a bandh in Gadchiroli, Bhandara and Gondia districts since Wednesday http://www.asianage.com/presentation/leftnavigation/news/top-story/16- maha-cops-die-in-naxal-ambush-.aspx Maoists kill two, blow up school Hindu, 24 May 2009 Garwah/Chatra (Jharkhand): Maoists kidnapped and killed two villagers and detonated explosives in a school building in Jharkhand s Garwah and Chatra districts in separate incidents, officials said on Saturday. Maoists abducted two men from their homes at Bhandaria in Garwah on Friday night and shot dead one of them, claiming that he was a police informer, and beat the other to death for not paying for a new rifle, Garwah Superintendent of Police Saket Kumar Singh said http://www.hindu.com/2009/05/24/stories/2009052450130100.htm Two top Maoist leaders killed in encounter Hindu, 25 May 2009 TADVAI (WARANGAL DT.): Two top Maoist leaders Patel Sudhakar Reddy alias Suryam alias Srikanth and Kanugula Venkataiah one a Central Committee member and the other a State Committee member, were killed in an exchange of fire with the police in the early hours of Sunday on the Gaurappa hillocks near Lavvala village in the thick Tadvai forest area. According to Superintendent of Police V. C. Sajjanar, on credible information about the increased movement of naxal groups in the forest area, special party police teams were pressed into combing operations for the past two weeks. One of the parties spotted a group of naxals camping on the top of Gaurappa hillocks near Lavvala village in Tadvai mandal in the early hours of Sunday and there was a sudden exchange of fire http://www.hindu.com/2009/05/25/stories/2009052557100100.htm Maoist faction threat to MLA Asian Age, 25 May 2009 May 24: M2, a break-away group of the CPI (Maoist) in Orissa, on Sunday allegedly threatened to kill newly-elected Biju Janata Dal legislator K. Narayan Rao for his "links with Christian militants" in southern Orissa district of Gajapati.bMr Rao was elected from the Parlakhemundi Assembly constituency in Maoist-affected Gajapati district in south Orissa. M2, a pro-hindu militant group, was formed following the reported rift in the Maoist group in the wake of the killing of senior Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Swami Laxmananand Saraswati in Kandhamal district on August 23 last year. The CPI

(Maoist) had earlier claimed responsibility for the killing http://www.asianage.com/presentation/leftnavigation/news/india/maoistfaction-threat-to-mla.aspx How Lashkar funded transnational terror campaign by Praveen Swami Hindu, 28 May 2009 MUMBAI/NEW DELHI: Back in 2006, the lives of a millionaire Omani businessman and a struggling computer technician from Kerala intersected with the Lashkar-e-Taiba s battle-hardened jihadists. Even now, six months after the arrest of Ernakulam-born Sarfaraz Nawaz and Muscat entrepreneur Ali Abdul Aziz al-hooti, investigators in India and Oman are struggling to understand the complex networks that emerged: networks that they are discovering bound together Indian Mujahideen attacks in southern India with the Lashkar s assault on Mumbai and a series of planned bombings in West Asia http://www.hindu.com/2009/05/28/stories/2009052860421000.htm Lahore court bench poser to A-G: Why was India not bound to implement UN resolutions on Kashmir? Hindu, 31 May 2009 ISLAMABAD: If Pakistan was bound to implement the UN Security Council resolution on Jamat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed, why was India not bound to implement UN resolutions on Kashmir, a full bench of the Lahore High Court wanted to know from Pakistan Attorney-General Latif Khosa on Saturday. The observation came during the hearing of a petition by Mr. Saeed and another JuD leader Colonel (retired) Nazir Ahmed against their house arrest since December 2008 http://www.hindu.com/2009/05/31/stories/2009053154760800.htm Delhi stunned: UK & China stall move to blacklist Masood Azhar Indian Express, 31 May 2009 Barely seven months after the Mumbai attacks, Indian efforts in the United Nations to place sanctions on Jaish-e-Mohammad founder Maulana Masood Azhar have received a major setback. In a surprise move, the United Kingdom has joined hands with China to block the Indian request to proscribe both Azhar and Azam Cheema, the Lashkar-e-Toiba operative accused in the Mumbai train blasts, under the UN s Al Qaeda and Taliban Sanctions resolution (1267). India had wanted these two along with Abdul Rehman Makki, another LeT ideologue, to be included in the list just like the Jamaatud-Dawa and its head Hafiz Mohammed Saeed were added along with other LeT operatives after the Mumbai attacks. The banning under UN resolution 1267 means freezing of assets, travel ban and embargo on arms http://www.indianexpress.com/news/delhi-stunned-uk-&-china-stall-move-toblacklist-masood-azhar/468636/
