January 2016 Volume 41 Issue 1 The President s Corner As this New Year begins, I want to thank everyone who attended the Christmas Dinner last year. It was great to see so many members in a relaxed setting before the busy Christmas Holidays. Special thanks to Nan & Dan Cook, Bill & Jeannette Rudolph and Wanda Cook who all assisted with food preparation. Leslie and Kelsey catered the meal again in 2015 and I know everyone was grateful to them for another excellent meal. Finally, thanks to Dan Terry and Bill & Janice Blanchard who drove their Corvairs to the 2015 Christmas Dinner (a late model coupe and a late model convertible). Following the November Elections meeting we have for 2016 a new Secretary, Nolan Grant, and a "new" Director, Jack Allison. As most of you know Jack has been a member for many years, and this month he shared with us how he came to be a member of Corvair Atlanta. Nolan is a long time Corvair enthusiast and mechanic. Please see Jack's article in this edition of the Connecting Rod. This month we will meet again at Clay Grant's home for the annual Spring-Fest Planning meeting. This meeting will be on Saturday, 09- January-2016. Clay's home is South of Atlanta, near Forsyth, Georgia. Anyone interested in volunteering for Spring-Fest this year please feel free to contact me via e-mail (address listed on the front page). Best Wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year!!! - Tom At the March 2015 CAI meeting, it was decided that we would pick ONE car show each month for club members to gather, IF THEY SO WISH. No shows are scheduled for January. President s Corner Page 1 Celebrations Page 5 Upcoming Meeting Page 2 Classified Ads Page 5 Calendars Page 3 About Us Page 8 Guest Submission Page 4

Please come prepared to volunteer for positions not yet filled. We are planning to have a Rally in 2016. It has been many years since this has been done. If you have a good idea for a design for our shirts and dash plaques I would like to have it. We do plan to do colored shirts again. It would be nice if someone would like to create a design. Guest Submission The birth of a C-A member I may not be at the top of the Seniority List in Corvair Atlanta-dom, but close to it. In 1979 the urge hit me to own a vintage vehicle. We were living in Smyrna, then, and I was having a conversation with a business acquaintance, Dick Konkle by name. Dick owned Jonquil Plastics which was formerly a movie theatre in Smyrna. He was one of these guys who could do most anything and had just finished up rebuilding an engine in his basement belonging to a 1960 coupe. also was Editor of the Connecting Rod at the time, a job he said I could have! Yes, Jack was all heart! I sold the car in 2013 having personally driven it some 40,000 miles. I understand the car now resides with a collector in Michigan, looking a bit different, but still mobile. Jack Allison, Resident Historian It was a fun project, he said, Never worked on one before. Was it for sale? Yes, and the price was affordable. I virtually bought it sight unseen! Once titled, I began to wonder if there wasn t a Corvair Club in the metro area. It seemed like the thing to pursue, but where does one start looking for something like that? At that time there was a talk radio station (WRNG) who had a host in the morning who called himself Ludlow Porch, a very funny and creative guy. Here s my answer, I thought. I ll call his show and ask his listeners if a Corvair Club exists? The very last call-in of the hour was Jack Corely who provided his number. That was a brave move considering the kooks out there. Jack, some members might recall, has been on and off the membership roster, is still around, still a Corvair enthusiast, and a guy just right to add to your list of friends. He 4
