MARCH 2015 IMPORTANT DON T MISS THIS MEETING! President: Bob Moore (303) 220.9572 romooreco@msn.com Vice President: Frank Kaylor (303) 589.5734 kfrank3@qwest.net Secretary/Treasurer: Mike Noll (303) 688.3736 mike.nollrc@yahoo.com Safety Officer: Matt Holley (720) 412.4692 3040sharps@gmail.com News Letter Frank Kaylor (303) 589.5734 kfrank3@qwest.net MEETING LOCATION, Parker Fire Station 42 located at 7320 S. Parker Road. The station is located on the east side of Parker Road just south of Arapahoe Road. NEXT MEETING: March 11, 2015 6:30 PM AT THE PARKER FIRE STATION Presidents March Message. Our March 11th meeting agenda will primarily be club business related to the 2015 Budget, Dues Level and Member Survey Summary. We won't be having any program because we want to ensure we have enough time to discuss any questions about the agenda topics. Also we will have a brief update on our Lease with the State Land Board. It's good news. Also we have now scheduled the Spring Field Work Day and the Fall Member Appreciation Weekend Event. By meeting time we may also have a date for the Warbirds Event. See you 6:30PM on Wednesday March 11th. Safe Flying Bob Moore Minutes 1 Crosswinds R/C Club Meeting Date: February 11, 2015 Location: Fire Station No. 42 Attendance: 17 Members, 1 Visitor Show and Tell The show and tell portion of the meeting was presented before the business portion of the meeting so that one young member in attendance could go home early to do his homework. Doug Gilbert showed us several airplanes he has constructed using a plastic, cardboard-like material called colorplast. Doug told us the material comes in 2 and 4 mil thicknesses and is available in a variety of colors. He described the unique construction features of each airplane and talked about the flying characteristics of each. Plans for various types and sizes of airplanes are available on the Internet from a company called SPAD to the Bone. S.P.A.D. stands for Simple Plastic Airplane Design. It focuses on using inexpensive materials found at hardware stores and sign shops in conjunction with simple construction methods. He told of using yardsticks for wing spars and PVC plastic and aluminum channel sections for fuselages as well as other materials used for construction.

Business Meeting The business portion of the meeting was called to order by President, Bob Moore at 7:00 PM and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. We went around the room and each member introduced themselves and told a little something about his or her interest in radio controlled airplanes. New member Mike Rix introduced himself and his son Weston. Visitor Brad Barnum introduced himself saying he was considering joining Crosswinds. Approval of the minutes of the January 14 meeting was tabled because there was no newsletter this month and therefore the minutes had not been published. President's Report Bob Moore reported that Member Surveys were still coming in. The survey asks for input to help determine what activities, events, field improvements and other items should be planned for the coming year. He said that so far there has been a good response of volunteers willing to work at various projects and events, but few willing to lead or head up the events. Bob ask that the surveys be returned before the end of the month so that results could be presented at the March general membership meeting. Mike Noll reported the club currently has three accounts with First Bank in Castle Rock. The balance in the checking account is $XXX, the balance in the Lease Security Deposit account is $XXX and the balance in the Time Deposit account is $XXX. Income for the month of January included dues and initiation fees from two new members, Matt Vanderslice and John Neumeier totaling $300. Expenses included paying AMA club charter fees and nametags for new members. Total expenses for the month were $118.05. Safety Officer's Report Matt Holley ask for suggestions regarding safety issues. It was suggested Matt include topics in the newsletter about being aware of the hazards of wearing loose clothing when starting engines and also the proper place to stand when running up the engine. No further business being presented, a motion to adjourn was made by Dorethea Thomas; seconded by Norm Vanderslice and the meeting adjourned at 7:34 PM. Submitted by Mike Noll Secretary/Treasurer He said the Executive Council met earlier in the week to review club operating costs for the past several years. He said the Executive Council will be meeting again to analyze these historical costs and the results of the Member Survey in order to propose an operating budget for the coming year. Vice President's Report Frank Kaylor reminded the membership of the Wings Expo coming up February 21 and passed around a signup sheet for anyone wishing to attend. Secretary/Treasurer's Report 2

FEATURE ARTICLE By Dennis (Sparky) Kordes The Photo shows the building setup I used for the reintroduced kit from BMJR of Carl Goldberg's rubber powered, stick and tissue model called a Ranger 28. I first built this model in 1957, at 16 years old. My Mom ordered it for me from the Mail Order Sears Roebuck catalog. I built this kit using the same type of tools and techniques that were used to build the first one. The building board was a flat price of corrugated cardboard, about 18" x 24", long enough for a wing panel or the length of the fuselage. With the board slipped under the plan, a length of wax paper on top kept glue off the plans. The new kit parts are all laser cut, but the original kit had parts printed on balsa sheet. A single edge razor blade was used to cut out each part. 3

A small hardwood block for a cutting board, and a block with sandpaper glued on each side completed the balsa shaping tools. Sewing pins kept the parts together on the board while the glue was drying. Testors medium fast drying glue was used. I will send another photo when the airplane is finished, with some flight info about the first one and this one. I hope this will bring back some fond memories for older Crosswinds members, and create some interest among younger members about how these airplanes were built and flown. Some idle comparisons... Corrugated cardboard building board.. Sewing pins to hold parts... Testors glue (hour or more to dry)... Printed or stamped parts sheets.. Razor blades... Listen to radio while building...
