War, Violence and the Democratic State is split in to three key sections which evaluate the ethics of war and peace; resistance and collaboration and political violence and the state. Indicative content over these sections includes evaluation of issues such as pacifism and the absolute renunciation of war; theories such as 'just war'; the rules of war including questions such as noncombatant immunity; political obligation (conscription and conscientious objection), the ethical and moral problems associated with the aftermath of war (punishment and war crimes tribunals). The emphasis is on the visual arts and will explore the following themes through the work of many artists: the avant-garde, futurism, dadaism and surrealism, socialist realism,fascist aesthetics, war art,contemporary political issues. The interaction between art and politics will be also be examined through an examination of cinema as a specific artistic medium.
