Boca Raton Orchid Society January, 2011 The Orchid Sentinel Thursday, January 13, 2011 Program 7:30 p.m. Inside this issue: Board Of Directors President s Message 2 AOS 4 Local Events 5 BROS Show Plant Table 8 3, 6, & 7 Topic: New Hybrids with Catasetum, Cycnoches and Mormodes Speaker: Fred Clark--- Sunset Valley Orchids Catasetum, Cycnoches and Mormodes are three related genera from the Tribe Cymbidieae. Individually, each has been considered an orchid oddity, or botanical, of interest mainly to the seriously addicted enthusiast. These plants have a brief deciduous period in winter, when the plants need a definite dry rest period bordering on neglect. These robust orchids are native to lowland tropical forests in Central and South America and are usually grown in warm or intermediate conditions. This talk will feature a widescreen computer slide show on some of the new hybrids and breakthroughs in the hybridization of Catasetum, Cycnoches and Mormodes. Our speaker will be Fred Clarke of Sunset Valley Orchids in Vista, California. Refreshments & Advertisements 9 Fred Clarke has been growing orchids for 29 years and has been hybridizing for 19 of those years. With over 22 years as a professional grower and manager in the horticultural industry, Fred applies this skills at his orchid nursery; Sunset Valley Orchids, located in San Diego. He is a passionate orchid grower whose curiosity in orchids is broad and varied. Although developing Cattleya hybrids has been his sustaining interest, he is also actively creating new Bulbophylum and Paphiopedilum hybrids plus some others to be named if they work out! Fred s pioneering work in Catasetum intergeneric hybrids led to the development of several notable hybrids, most recently the grex, Fredclarkeara After Dark, which produced the blackest flower ever witnessed. This grex has received five FCC s and three AM s on the first flowers shown for judging! Fred is a Probationary Judge in the Pacific South Judging Region. His plants have received hundreds of quality awards from the American Orchid Society. Fredclarkeara After Dark, Fred will be providing our Raffle Table and will also have plants for sale, so Boca members will not be allowed to sell plants at this meeting. Come on out and learn something new about these intriguing orchid genera. See you at the meeting, Jackie Wood, Program Chair

Feb 13 7:30pm BROS Monthly Meeting TBA President s Message: Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy Chanukah. Those of you who could not make the Annual Meeting/Holiday Party missed a fantastic evening. The evening was filled with dancing, music, food, orchids and friends. Thanks to all those who contributed gifts to the Boca Raton Police Department who in turns gives them to The Boca Raton Boys and Girls Club. Your generosity is much appreciated. A special thank you to Belinda Krause and Lorraine Conover for putting together this year s Annual Meeting/Holiday Party. January finds us in preparation for our annual show on February 12 th and 13 th. As you know, lots of help will be needed. Please sign up for a volunteer opportunity at the next meeting where sheets will be made available. I am sure all of you made a New Years resolution to become more active in the society, so here s your chance to get involved, know more of the membership and help support the society goals. There will be opportunities to volunteer starting Thursday, February 10 th through the end of the show February 13 th. We need help with setting up/tearing down, getting the vendors unloaded on Friday and assistance with the actual show. BROS members have always turned out to support their society and I am sure this year will be no different. As a reminder, all of you should have received your Annual show tickets. This is another way to support your society. Please mail back or drop off your payment at the January meeting. If you have not received your tickets, they will be at the next meeting for you to pick up. Get out there and sell your tickets or buy them yourself to give as gifts. This is a great way to get others interested in the wonderful world of orchids. Corrine Juliano President

Page 8 NEEDED: Newsletter Editor: As many of you are aware, we have been looking for someone to take over the position of Newsletter Editor for the last 6 months. As of this date, we have one board member Sharon Wesolowski that has stepped up and will try to publish the newsletter for January. We are still in need of a volunteer willing and able to write the monthly newsletter. Unfortunately, if a replacement is not found, the newsletter will end until a volunteer can fill this role. For those of you who were not able to attend the November meeting or our Holiday Party, I spoke about how this is OUR society not the board member s society. We encourage everyone to help wherever possible. Whether you are working as a board member, in the kitchen, at the library, newsletter editor, running the raffle table, bringing in snacks, helping with a special event, participating in the orchid education program, or whatever it is, the Society doesn t exist without everyone s contribution. If you are currently not involved in something, please stand up! If everyone works a little better, the society will be much more enriching and fulfilling. On behalf of all the members, I again would like to thank Marian McElligott for being our newsletter editor for the past two years. Marian has done an incredible job. Many thanks for the time she has donated. Corrine Juliano President B.R.O.S Plant Table Registration Instructions. 1. You must have owned your plant for at least 6 months. 2.
