I. Opening II. III. IV. Student Senate September 22, 2009 J.W. Jones Student Union- Boardroom, 7:00 p.m. a. Call to Order: meeting called to order by President Holm at 7:03 p.m. b. Pledge of Allegiance c. Roll Call- Secretary Montgomery called roll. Senators Saffold, Snyder, and Swanson were not in attendance. Associate Member Sinclair joined the meeting after roll was called. Hearing of Agenda Related Items President s Report a. Student Passing- President Holm announced a bell ringing will be held in honor of Britnee Baldridge who passed away last weekend. Watch for an announcement of the date and time of the bell ringing. Counseling services are available at the Wellness Center to all students. b. Yearbook Pictures- President Holm announced that the Senate group photo will be taken the 1 st week of November, look for an exact time and location to be announced next week. c. Constituency Reports- President Holm explained that in the past constituency reports have not always been completed and we are currently in the process of developing a new system. If you have any ideas, a points system, incentives, etc. please notify President Holm. d. Committee Meeting Attendance- It is extremely important that members are attending all of their committee meetings. It is the member s responsibility to notify the committee chair if they are unable to attend. The attendance policy states that any member is eligible for termination if they miss five meetings, or three consecutive meetings. e. Dr. Fridell- President Holm extended a warm welcome to Dr. Fridell, the Faculty Senate President. Vice President s Report a. No Report
V. Secretary s Report a. Additions, corrections, deletions to the minutes of the last meeting? Senator Faltin stated that there should be one correction to the previous meeting s minutes. VI. Treasurer s Report a. Balance- $ 46,273.95 b. Balance is placed on file, subject to audit c. Treasurer VanNordstrand explained that the balance is the same due to a new program. The account has not yet been updated and hopefully next week we will have an accurate account balance. VII. Committee Reports a. Organizational Affairs i. No Report b. Events Planning i. Pancake Breakfast- Senator Porter announced that the pancake breakfast was a success. Thank you to everyone who volunteered! ii. Senator Porter also announced that the Events Planning committee is working on walkout day tee shirts as well as the Homecoming Alumni Banquet. iii. Committee meeting will follow the Senate meeting. c. Public Relations i. Homecoming Banner- Chairwoman Suntken announced the Homecoming banner meeting is this Sunday, September 27, at 1:00 p.m. - anyone is welcome! The location of the banner meeting is undecided so please meet outside OCA this Sunday if interested in helping. ii. Meeting time is Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. in the Student Senate office. d. Student Affairs i. No Report e. Governmental Affairs i. Legislative Reception: Senator Morris announced that preparation and planning for Legislative Reception has begun.
ii. Parliamentarian Position: Senator Barbosa stated that nominations will be taken next week. Senator Barbosa also explained that the Parliamentarian keeps the meeting going, follows Robert s Rules of Order, helps write legislation, and delivers fun parliamentary facts so if interested please contact him. iii. New Bill: Senator Morris explained that the RHA Liaison bill would be voted on during new business. iv. Meetings are held Mondays at 4 p.m. in the OCA. f. Civic Service i. Chairwoman Solon announced that the blood drive signup sheet is being passed around, and invited her committee to help with donor phone calls. VIII. University Committees a. Student Regent: Student Regent Gardner announced that the Board of Regents met last Friday at 1 pm. In the meeting they discussed internal recognition, outstanding teachers, and President Jasinski made announcements as well as shared a letter from a Northwest parent. b. Traffic Court- Senator Holder announced that traffic court will be meeting Thursday at 3:30 p.m. IX. Chief of Staff a. Senator Faltin gave thanks to all of the new associate members. Senator Faltin announced that her replacement should hopefully be announced next week. If interested please contact Senator Faltin or Vice President Mittan. X. Parliamentarian a. Search for Parliamentarian: please notify Senator Barbosa if interested as soon as possible. XI. Organizational Information a. SAC- Senator Ronning, the SAC liaison, announced that the Saving Abel concert is now sold out. Upcoming events include supermarket sweep on the 24 th, as well as Whitney Port from The Hills and Dave Coulier from Full House. Tickets for Dave Coulier will be on sale October 21 for five dollars.
b. RHA- Senator Dunn announced that RHA is busy forming delegation for their regional conference. XII. Unfinished Business a. None XIII. New Business a. Election Results i. President Holm gave congratulations to Freshman Class President Allison Hay, and Freshman Class Representatives Stefania Strohman, Zach Fleer, and Jared Ludwig. Congratulations new Student Senate members! b. Swearing in of new members: Two new Associate Members and three Freshman Class Representatives were sworn in by President Holm. c. RHA Liaison: Senator Barbosa stood to read Senate Bill No. 1, sponsored by Senator Barbosa and Senator Maddux. Discussion was held, Senator Ussary moved to vote, Senator Sexton seconded the motion. A vote was taken and the 87 th Student Senate Bill No. 1 passed with a majority vote, with one abstention. XIV. Hearing of Non-Agenda Related Items a. Associate Members- Senator Faltin announced that those interested in Associate Membership should contact her. b. VEI- Isioma Nwadozi announced that the Vision Empowerment Institute began last fall and consisted of 27 students with a purpose to build leaders that can handle not just everyday issues but multi-cultural issues as well. Nwadozi thanked Student Senate for supporting their endeavors and invited the Senate to the VEI event on October 15 th. c. Car Wash for Philanthropy- Senator Porter announced that Sigma Sigma Sigma and Phi Sigma Kappa are teaming up to put on a car wash benefiting Special Olympics and the Robbie Page Foundation. The car wash will be held September 23 from 3-6 p.m. donations only please. d. Vice President Mittan extended a thank you to Senator Faltin for all her hard work throughout years. e. Senator Walter welcomed Dr. Dewhirst back! XV. Closing
a. Announcements i. Senator Clark announced that the Homecoming Oleo and MC tryouts are tomorrow from 5-9:00 p.m., signups are in the OCA until 4 p.m. ii. President Holm announced applications for student ambassadors are available October 1 st online and in Mable Cook as well. iii. Senator Ranney extended a thank you to Isioma for inviting us to the VEI event, as well as returning to Senate and explaining how they used their appropriations. b. Inspiration- Senator Macarro i. If you have good intentions in life, love, or Student Senate do not let anyone stop you! ii. Next week s inspiration- Senator Ranney c. Senator Barbosa moved to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Senator Sexton.
