Spotlight Interview MFM Young Professional Meet Ron Holmes! He is a Young Professional member of MFM and BCCA. Ron works for Hulu, based in Santa Monica, CA. How long have you worked in media? I have been in the media industry for a year and a half now. How did you get involved with MFM and what do you benefit the most from by being a member? I got involved with MFM after attending the 2016 BCCA New York Media Credit Seminar. It was during last year s function I met Jamie Grande, Arcelia Pimentel and learned about MFM. The most significant benefit is the huge networking opportunity which has played a pivotal role in my professional development. By meeting other media finance professionals and utilizing their vast experience and knowledge base, I am learning the ways of this complex industry. Now I have many contacts which I can lean on and turn to if I have questions or concerns. How do you think young professional members can help grow MFM? We can help grow MFM by getting involved with the various committees, attend localisms, the MFM conference and staying up to speed with the current trends in the media industry. With the YP members being the leaders of tomorrow, it is on us to play an active role within MFM to ensure the success this group has helped us achieve continues. Where do you get the majority of your news from? What platform and source? I source a lot of my news from social media posts of various news organizations, but also from credit-related newsletters and websites: AmericanInno.com/Boston; Forbes.com; Finance.Yahoo.com; MandMGlobal.com; BroadcastingCable.com; and MediaPost.com. How do you discover new programming content and what shows are on your must-watch list? I discover new programming from friends discussing shows, online ad placements and other social sites mentioning what is trending now. Shows on my must watch list are Bloodline, Narcos, Mad Men, Master of None, Ballers, Parks and Rec, Black Mirror, Luke Cage, Dare Devil, Girl Boss and the Handmaid s Tale. What are you most looking forward to in the industry in the next 1-2 years? In the next few years I am looking forward to seeing how media companies continue to react to the various platforms on which we view content. For instance, Twitter now has NFL games streaming, Facebook pauses videos to display an ad and SnapChat has stories geared toward latest trends from fashion to award shows. With cord cutting becoming the norm, it will be interesting to see how cable and network companies adapt to this trend. What do you find most interesting about working in media? The most interesting aspect would have to be the creativity; it is incredible to see so many new original shows airing and turning out to be huge hits overnight. Also, the constant changes through technological advances which has changed the industry forever from new tools available in the programmatic space; digital advertising has taken off making it easier for ads to reach the targeted audience through various platforms. How do you like to spend your time outside of work? Outside of work, I am a passionate car enthusiast, spending as much time as I can at a race track or wrenching on cars with my friends (cars are primarily what we talk about). Also I love movies, going out to see a new release once a week if possible. I was fortunate to be at the Black Mass movie premiere in Boston which checked off a bucket list item for me. 4
