BEL signs MoU with Saab for radar o Defence undertaking BEL has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Saab, Sweden for jointly marketing the L-Band 3D Air Surveillance Radar, RAWL-03. o Bharat Electrical Limited (BEL) is engaged in the design, manufacture & supply of radars such as like weapon locating, surveillance & communication systems. o RAWL-03 will be offered in both ship-borne and land-based configurations. Peru declares 60-day state of emergency o Peru declared a 60-day state of emergency on its Colombian border to ensure security from the menace of drug trafficking in a region. o The state of emergency has been declared in Peru's Amazonian province of Putumayo, which is separated from Colombia by the river of the same name. o The president informed the first patrol was carried out by the Peru police and armed forces. WPI jumps to 5.77% in June o India's wholesale inflation grew 5.77% in June, a four-and-half year high, driven by some food items and fuel prices. o Wholesale inflation rate, measured by Wholesale Price Index (WPI), is a marker for price movements in bulk buys for traders and broadly mirrors trends in shop-end prices. o The data for the month of April has been revised to 3.62% from 3.18%. India's 1st skill training centre in Odisha o Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan laid the foundation stone of India's first National Skill Training Institute in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. o The proposed institute will impart training to trainers and create a skillbased ecosystem to meet the industry demands. o The Institute costing Rs 160 crore will come up over five acres of land and have state-of-the-art facilities. 8th India-Oman Joint Meeting Begins in Muscat o The Commerce Minister, Suresh Prabhu, co-chaired 8th session of India- Oman Joint Commission Meeting along with Minister of Industry of Oman, Dr. Ali bin Masoud Al Sunaidy. o The Commerce Minister launched investment friendly programmes with a business opportunity in the country. o JCM include cooperation in space, SMEs, food security, including durable foods and visit of young entrepreneurs. Railways & Mahametro to create MRTS in Nagpur o Indian Railways today signed an agreement with the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro) to create a mass rapid transit system in Nagpur. o Under the MoU, the Railways and MahaMetro would work towards linking railway line to metro coaches on broad gauge network. o The MoU was signed between Maharastra CM Devendra Fadnavis and transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari. o From April 2019, names of all arms licence holders, new or old, will be included in a national database and they will be issued a unique identification number (UIN). o The move is aimed at keeping a tab on authorised private gun holders. o Every licensing and renewing authority will have to enter the data in the National Database of Arms Licences system, which will generate a UIN. SBI kisan mela on July 18 o State Bank of India (SBI) will organise kisan melas in 875 rural and semiurban branches spread across Karnataka on July 18. o It is an initiative of the bank to connect with farmers and resolve their grievances. o The bank also plans to offer Kisan Credit Cards to farmers. The bank will also make farmers aware of the benefits of timely renewal of KCC account & usage of KCC Rupay Card. LIC to acquire 51% stake in IDBI Bank o The Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) gave approval to the acquisition of up to 51% stake in debt-ridden IDBI Bank. o This was informed by Economic Affairs secretary S C Garg. Now, the stateowned LIC will approach market regulator SEBI on the matter. o The LIC stake buy will help the IDBI get a capital support of 10,000 to 13,000 crore rupees. Google celebrated Georges Lemaitre's birthday o Google celebrated the 124th birth anniversary of Belgian astronomer Georges Lemaitre with a doodle on 17 July 2018. o Lemaitre is credited with the Big Bang Theory, which says that the universe originated from a single atom called 'Cosmic Egg'. o In 1934, Lemaître received the Francqui Prize, the highest Belgian scientific distinction. o President Ram Nath Kovind has approved the Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention and Protection) Bill, 2015, converting it to an Act. o The bill has been converted into an Act after almost three years it was passed by Assam's state assembly on August 13, 2015. o It imposes imprisonment of up to seven years, along with a fine of up to Rs 5 lakh, for branding someone as witch. CIC launches bilingual mobile app o The Central Information Commission (CIC) has launched an updated version of its mobile application in Hindi. o RTI applicants can submit their second appeal or complaint and link papers in both the languages i.e. in Hindi and English, through this app. o Using this app, people can get real-time status in both the Hindi and English languages. Panel to tackle pollution around Taj Mahal o The government has formed a committee comprising officials of the environment ministry, experts from NEERI, IITs and various other forums to look into the issue of industrial pollution around the iconic Taj Mahal. o The committee will be headed by C K Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. o The committee will take up the problems on a case-to-case basis. UK tops global ranking of nations' soft power o UK has topped an annual global ranking of nations' soft power, with France placed 2 nd on the list of 30 countries which does not feature India. o The 2018 'Soft Power 30' index, ranked Germany as third followed by US. o India does not figure on the list, but this year's report also features a chapter dedicated solely to Asia, listing 10 countries in the region, ranking India's soft power as 8 th. o PNB has announced opening of second centralised loan processing centre, in a Mumbai branch. o The centre aims to strengthen the bank's internal systems and processes. o Under this, the bank will focus on profit maximisation, improvement of asset quality & recovery, and increasing productivity among others. o PNB's first CLPC is located at Connaught Place branch in New Delhi. India to remain fastest growing economy o The International Monetary Fund has projected a growth rate of 7.3% in 2018 & 7.5% in 2019 for India as against 6.7% in 2017. o The latest growth rate projection for India is slightly less 0.1% in 2018 and 0.3% in 2019 than its April projections. o According to IMF, India will remain the fastest growing major economy in 2019. BrahMos supersonic missile test-fired o India's indigeneously developed surface-to-surace supersonic cruise missile BrahMos was successfully test-fired from Chandipur Test Range off the Odisha coast. o BrahMos is a joint venture between DRDO and NPOM of Russia. o BrahMos is the first Indian missile whose life has been extended from 10 to 15 years. o BrahMos has been operationalised in the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force.
