Call to Order Shannon Enoch VP of Administration The meeting was called to order at 7:35pm on Tuesday, August 5 th, 2017 by Vice President of Administration Shannon Enoch. We postponed for late members and guests to arrive. II. Introductions The roll was called. There were 5 Executive board members, 5 Senators, our advisor, and one visitor present. III. Executive Announcements A. Senate Elections Abigail Stevenson, VP of Comm. Vice President Stevenson announced the elections, reminding all of the times and responsibilities of each participant. IV. Presidential Announcements Christopher Vinci, President of Senate President Vinci: First thing: the run for Grace and Andy is coming up very soon September 30 th. Senate is responsible for helping. I will be going to different businesses and asking for their sponsorship. If any Senators are interested, please contact me or email the student account A point of clarification: right now, we are under the Constitution from last year, but, by executive order, we added Class Representatives to the elections this year. The new Senate that is being elected will be elected until February, when we will elect the next year s senate [if the revised Constitution passes]. The housing Senators will be in charge of their housing placement [or hall] at that time until they move in the fall for the following academic year. Senator Deans: Regarding the committees, are we still going to have them? President Vinci: We still have yet to discuss that. Senator O neil: Will these new terms end in February then?
President Vinci: Yes, around February. One last thing, for Senate, I am going to be putting a QR code on everything. It s the future, I think it s cool, and I talked to the head of Tech & Trek, and I got him to put a QR reader on the suggested apps on the ipad. IV. Business A. Welcome back Well, everyone! Welcome back! It feels kinda weird sitting down here in these seats, but it feels kinda nice to be discussing things. If you have any questions about coming back, please let us know. In regards to your Constituents and the Senate elections, keep the students involved and answer their questions. You are their voice. Any questions about what has been happening thus far? Senator Deans: [My question] has more to do with what we are doing? Vice President Enoch: This is something that we are going to be dealing with, with the Constitution and the new elections. You can keep in touch with the residents around you now, but you can also communicate with RA s. Senator Deans: So, I was just more or less wondering if we are taking a new direction or staying the same course? President Vinci: We are adding class senators. We are going to be enforcing new things that were not being enforced in the past. There were things such as meeting with constituents that were not up kept in the past that we will be keeping with in the future. In general, we are going to try to. In the past, Senate has been a run, or parented organization, by the Executive Board. Our view is to start and create a Senate body that we can foster and create a relationship with. You guys can think for yourselves. There is more to that that we will build on later. Vice President Enoch: This year, we would like to connect with the senators more than we already have. This year, we want to make sure the voice of the student body is heard.we want to take action now more than we ever have. Senator Stryzak: Do we need to reapply for our positions? VP: yes. Senator Stryzak: Do I need to start looking for a male Athletic rep? Advisor Okuma: The SAC reps are appointed positions, not elected, so the SAC board will look for someone to fulfill that position.
B. Run for Grace and Andy Vice President Enoch: It will be Saturday, September 30 th. Registration is at 8am and the walk is at 9am. We not only want to sponsor the event, but also have Senate take part. We want to get the Students involved as much as we can. What we want from the Senators is to have you all email your Constituents and ask them to take part. Registration is $10. The person who has the most constituents out and taking part will receive a reward. If you are very interested in doing the run, please partake, by all means. The main thing we need right now is volunteers. If you can help and sign up, please do so! Senator Deans: I would like to take part. Vice President Enoch: Wonderful! If you can please send an email to President Vinci, he will keep track of what is happening and who is wanting to take part. Can someone please explain what this [event] is for? President Vinci: 10 years ago, a drunk driver who had 14 DUI s before hit [Grace, Andy, and Evan] while they were on their way to Walmart. A lot of students were very upset and went to Columbus to complain. In order to help remember those students, Senate helps sponsor the event that funds two scholarships. Advisor Okuma: Andy was a freshmen who is a music major. Grace was also a freshmen who was a writing major. They were going to Walmart to buy things for spring break. Evan was in the back seat, and he survived and he had 14 different surgeries. He visits the college a lot. There parents are still very involved, and they attend meetings every other week. Grace and Andy have plaque by the chapel, and if you do the walk, you pass it. Vice President Enoch: So, as you can all see, this is more than just a run or walk. Please, if you can not help volunteer, I understand, and, if you cannot run or walk, I completely understand. Just please keep the message out about the run and about Grace and Andy. President Vinci: You can sign up online. Senator Deans: If we want to volunteer, do we sign up? Vice President Enoch: Email the senate account or President Vinci. Senator Kistler: [It isn t necessarily cheaper], but it is easier for them, and you can definitely get a shirt if you register early. President Vinci: If you see the poster around campus, it has a QR code on that you can scan and the first link on there, I think, is the link to the registration page.
C. Tech & Trek Walk Vice President Enoch: The first official Trek is going to be 4:30pm this Friday afternoon, September 8 th. We are going to be taking a trek around the 3-mile square, and it will be with faculty, staff, and students. If you cannot be involved, please get others involved, especially with those brand new trekkin boots. Get the word out! It s going to be a beautiful day! VI. Senators Mention A. Beach Party Feedback Vice President: First is the Beach Party. What do you guys think? Is there anything you heard from your Constituents? Sen Stryzak: A lot of girls on my team actually went and they said they had a blast, so, well done! Senator Deans: I think the interruption [between songs] was resourceful and I think something like that would be useful. We could even use more of those, even if it is just requests. Senator O neil: The day that it happened was a busy night for everyone, and I know it was also a school night, so I don t know if it would be better to wait a week to do that type of thing. I don t know if it would get more people to show up, but it was another event in a congested time. President Vinci: So what needs to happen--this year we were in a bit of a crunch, so what happened is that the committee that planned institute week already had been established for a while. So, if we are going to change that, if you could remind us at the end of this year, that would be great so that we can have a student on that committee. B. Tech and Trek Vice President Enoch: What are yo hearing so far? Are there any specific difficulties? Classroom problems? Senator Deans: One of my classes is almost completely paperless, so, that is going very well. Senator Aghbar actually mentioned that he is having trouble using his laptop because he is so used to his ipad so far. Senator Kistler: A lot of what I have heard is that people are still skeptical, so, so far so good, but it s only the beginning, so. Senator Jordan: I have heard problems about the keyboards that stop working. If you bring it off the keyboard, and then take it back off, it will work better, but only for a few minutes.
Advisor Okuma: Take that to Dray. I do not know if folks know this yet, but one of the reasons we went with this case is because our keypads are charging from the ipad. If that is happening, take it to Dray because it may be malfunctioning. It is under warranty right now. Vice President Enoch: Speaking of which, if you are having hardware issues, send that to Dray. If you are having app questions, go to the ipad tech center [Tech and Trek center in the library] on the first floor and ask them. Visitor Emily: For one of my classes, we have to use excel. There are things that we have to do in Advanced Accounting that we cannot do on the ipad s. Is there is a way to expand excel s capabilities? Vice President Enoch: I have heard the same issue, so we can reach out. Advisor Okuma will look into this. Senator O neil: A lot of labs have been using HighBench to record notes. The issue with this is that the app is not as proficient as the app. The website is still accessible, so it is not a huge problem, but it would be nice to see this improved. President Vinci: Any problems with apps, please take it to the group in the Library. Senator Kistler: Mobile Moodle does not always work as well, so if we can have the website link distributed? Vice President Enoch: If you find out the tricks, go to the guys in the library so that we can have it distributed. Is there anything else that you guys would like to discuss in Senators mention tonight? VI. Notes from Gallery Senate Guests Vice President Enoch: This is the part for our Senate guests, so if you would like to bring anything in, now is your time! A. Senate Conference Vice President Enoch: Senate has been invited to a private liberal arts school conference, similar to the place we went to last spring. If you are interested, please write a letter as to why you are interested. Send that to the Senate account by Thursday at noon. We are leaving next Friday night at 6pm and eating around 7pm. We will be staying at or around Earlham campus. Senator Deans: Just to double check, that goes to the Senate account?
Vice President Enoch: Yes, it does go to the Senate account. Please let your fellow Senators know. Only past senators can go, so congratulations! Senator Deans: I was just curious as to why our visitor came tonight? Visitor Emily: I have special person who is on the Executive Board. Vice President Enoch: Anything else that you would like to talk about? Senator Deans: Are we going to be working with other clubs? President Vinci: The first few weeks, we would like to focus on senate and senator training, but yes, we will be hoping to do that later. VII. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 8:14pm by Vice President Enoch.
