Transcription:

Thursday! (almost Friday!) Normal class stuff needs to be out!! Today: look at the start of Imperialism read some things (excerpts!), take some notes, talk it out Tomorrow: you will be working on an illustrated timeline over the Spanish- American War (a war! What!? And its nickname is: the splendid little war - um what?)

Toward Empire! #10 Ch. 21!

Evolution of Foreign Policy CURRENTLY (late 1800s) we are catching the spirit of empire meaning?? What is the difference between expansion (that we saw throughout the 1800s with things like?) and imperialism? Not really settlement more like: naval bases, trading outposts, commercial centers- EXPLOIT the new land So where has our foreign policy come from? What did we think about dealing with foreign countries before this time? (read and answer Qs)

Imperialism- and this is why we should! So, how do we make the argument that we need to shift our foreign policy? Read each excerpt and: 1. Write the person s name who is speaking and the date 2. Explain this person s argument for why we should/shouldn t expand. 3. **What argument could you make against this person s reasoning? Will there be people who disagree with these arguments?

SO ABOUT THAT MAHAN GUY

Alfred Thayer Mahan Mahan s ARGUMENT is (seen in his book: The Influence of Sea Power Upon History) We have a lot of goods- we need to sell them- we need protection as we travel and places to stop along the way, so MAKE OUR NAVY BETTER!! (and get some colonies) Hey and look at the rest of the world! It s a race! So MAKE OUR N AVY BETTER!!

MAHAN influences a generation of policymakers, including Benjamin F. Tracy(Harrison s Sec of Navy): He does A LOT to build up our navy! 1889- US ranked 12 th among world navies 1893-7 th End of decade THIRD!! Look at that!!!

HAWAII!

We want Hawaii! Why? Missionaries wanted to convert the people to Christianity These missionaries advertised Hawaii s economic benefits to attract new settlers Sugar! We work our way into Hawaii s political and economic life through treaties in 1875 and 1887- many native Hawaiians are getting sick of us! Enter

Queen Liliuokalani came to power in 1891 Strong-willed nationalist who will resist the Americans taking over Hawaii!

Annexing Hawaii -Who went over to Hawaii first? What do they start to do? -What does Queen L. decide to do and why? -How do the different Presidents respond? (Cleveland and McKinley)

Annexing Hawaii When the treaty is being debated, people ask the question WHY SHOULD WE ANNEX HAWAII?? (3 key reasons)

STRATEGIC LOCATION! (both commercially and militarily)

I can t wait to get my hands on Hawaii! Yeah! It is so awesome for so many reasons! Let s go take it!! Other countries are going to want it! So we need to get it first!

Ew! They re just weird and wrong! We must do something! (like CIVILIZE and CHRISTIANIZE them!) Hmmm

Annexing Hawaii Yes, let s do it! Strategic location Commercially and militarily Others will take it if we don t! Japan wants it too! We have a responsibility to civilize and Christianize them! Um, I don t think so! This is rule over an area NOT destined for statehood We would have to include mongrels into our population! Would lead to colonial problems! These are the ones with the pics on the previous slides!
