Our objective is to evaluate the U.S. Policy of containment in response to the causes and effects of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Do Now: This OR That Write below if this relates to the Korean War, War in Vietnam OR Both. 1. People of this country protested against the French. 2. The United States got involved in an effort to contain communism. 3. The Soviet Union and China provided military supplies. 4. Over 2 million people died in the conflict. 5. This conflict had very different effects on the Northern and Southern portions of this country. 6. This conflict created over one million refugees. Member Ambassador s Responsibility Job Holder 1 Report about the policy of containment on the Causes of the Korean War 2 Report about the policy of containment on the Causes of the Vietnam War 3 Report about the policy of containment on the Effects of the Korean War 4 Report about the policy of containment on the Effects of the Vietnam War

Section #1 : Causes of the Korean War and Vietnam War Members #1 + 2 are leading this discussion and should be prepared to report out. The Soviet Union supplied weapons to North Korea. Tanks, airplanes and money from the USSR allowed the North Koreans to surprise attack South Korea. In only a few days, North Korea had spread deep into South Korean territory. The United States and United Nations were nervous that a North Korean victory over South Korea would mean the spread of communism into all of Korea. The U.S. meant to contain communism. 1. Why did the United States and the United Nations believe that they needed to get involved in Korea? In Vietnam, a man named Ho Chi Minh was sick of his country being a colony of France. He was determined to gain independence and began a war against the French. Vietnamese nationalists and communists were able to defeat the French, forcing them to surrender. The United States feared the spread of communism in Vietnam would lead to a domino effect where each new country that falls to communism would knock over its neighbors, just like dominoes. 2. How is this a cold war conflict? 3. Explain why the domino effect is or is not a good reason for the U.S. to get involved in Vietnam? 4. Big Question: Is the United States decision to get involved in Korea and Vietnam the best way to support their policy of containment? a) The United States should get involved in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War b) The United States should get involved in Korea, but not in the Vietnam War c) The United States should get involved in the Vietnam War, but not in Korea d) The United States should not get involved in either conflict. 5. Explain your answer to question #4 below.

Section #2 : Effects of the Korean and Vietnam War Members #3 + 4 are leading this discussion and should be prepared to report out. Four million soldiers and citizens did not return from the fighting of the Korean War. After a large advantage for North Korea, the war ended with neither side gaining much land. North Korea remained a communist country with a poor economy, the desire to build nuclear weapons and a strong hatred for the United States. On the other hand, South Korea has prospered with a strong economy, democratic elections and one of the best education systems in the world. 1. Based on the effects on North and South Korea, was U.S. involvement a good decision? 58,000 Americans and over 1.5 million Vietnamese died in the Vietnam War before the United States pulled out. After the conflict nearly 1.5 million Vietnamese left the country and over 200,000 died at sea upon escape. Vietnam itself remains a communist country even today. 2. Based on the effects in North and South Korea, was U.S. involvement a good decision? 3. Was the U.S. policy of containment effective in either Korea or Vietnam? Explain. 4. Big Question: Was the United States decision to get involved in Korea and Vietnam the best way to support their policy of containment? a) The United States should get involved in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War b) The United States should get involved in Korea, but not in the Vietnam War c) The United States should get involved in the Vietnam War, but not in Korea d) The United States should not get involved in either conflict. 5. Explain your answer to question #4 below.

Explain the United States policy of containment. Then decide if the U.S. could have only gotten involved in the Vietnam War OR Korean War, which one should they have gotten involved in? - Explain the policy of containment. (1 short paragraph) - Explain which conflict the United States SHOULD get involved in and WHY. (1 paragraph) - Explain which conflict the United States should NOT get involved in and WHY (1 paragraph) Is the policy of containment clearly explained? Yes No

Is it clear which conflict the U.S. SHOULD get involved in? Are factual examples used to explain WHY the U.S. should have gotten involved? Is it clear which conflict the U.S. should NOT get involved in? Are factual examples used to explain WHY the U.S. should NOT have gotten invoved?
