Clean India Mission- what should be done? Between 1986 and 1999 about 9.4 million lavatories were constructed. In the past four years alone, built about 49 million more. Post-swachh Bharat there is piped water in 1.5 lakh out of 2.45 lakh villages that have indoor toilets. National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) also shows that over 80% of rural households in 2014 reported that they had improved sources of drinking water since 2012.
- However, has not changed the fact that only 6.4% of villagers dump garbage in a designated dumping spot. Piles of garbage Cows gorging on plastic Dirty rivers Filthy drains These comprise health hazards like nothing else. Swachh Bharat cannot be accomplished by toilets alone.
European history of cleanliness Sanitation drive in the western world began in 1850s. Europeans do not believe that what leaves our body, such as excreta, sweat, or even hair, is polluting. 19th century England: many took up manual scavenging job willingly because they made good money out of it. Most importantly, all over the western world, miasma and high smell were associated with fever.
-
- The theory of miasma was subsequently proved wrong. It was replaced in the late 19th century by the germ theory of Pasteur and Koch. Nevertheless, the belief in miasma pointed to environmental factors behind ill health. This helped in creating the right ideological climate for accepting public sanitation and hygiene.
Environment, however, plays an insignificant role in Ayurveda. - Indian system of medicine does not connect open filth and stink with ill health. Illness is internal balance gone wrong and the external world is largely neutral. Hence, connecting good health to a clean environment does not come as easily to us as it does to those who fear miasma.

The Board to monitor the inflow of waters in the Cauvery basin and decide the quantum of water to be released to the States will also have a Cauvery Water Regulation Committee to implement the Board s decision.
India-China ties see a Xiamen reboot Modi s phone call to congratulate Chinese President Xi sets the tone for their June meeting Xiamen process a calibrated effort to rebuild ties that had been jolted last year by the Doklam military stand-off. After all it was at the sidelines of the Xiamen BRICS summit that Prime Minister Modi and President Xi decided to give a firm direction on re-building post- Doklam ties. Prime Minister decided to call President Xi. Set the tone: Qingdao the venue of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in June.
- It is anticipated that the Qingdao meeting would further change the narrative for the better, and set the stage for a bilateral summit, possibly later in the year. The India-China strategic economic dialogue would be held in Beijing on April 13-14, between the NITI Ayog and the China s top planning body, the National Development and Reform Commission.
No change in Doklam since 2017 No change has taken place at the Doklam stand-off area since last year, India s envoy Gautam Bambawale said, and blamed China squarely for the face-off, saying that it happened because tried to alter the status quo. The 73-day long stand-off ended on August 28 last year after China agreed to halt road-building activities at Doklam. The Chinese side may be erecting military barracks to bring in more soldiers, but that is well behind the sensitive area, he said in an interview to the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post. The India-China boundary is un-demarcated and undelineated, so we have to talk to each other to delineate and demarcate it, which means to draw the boundary line.
Damaged reefs turn butterflyfish into flexible eaters Fewer options on the menu could force you to be a less fussy eater. At least that's what Lakshadweep s melon butterflyfish experience, find scientists. In bleached coral reefs that host less food resources, these fish change their diets and eating patterns to adapt to reef damages caused by climate change. Climate change induced ocean warming can cause coral bleaching, which stresses coral patches and makes them prone to death.
Bleaching is not new in Indian reef systems; the bleaching event of 2010 killed patches of corals in several reefs off the Lakshadweep Islands. - Such short-term resilience may not guarantee longerterm survival, according to the scientists.
Water from desert air MIT scientists report, in Nature Communications, a device that can extract water from the moisture in the air, even in the driest of regions, such as a desert. Using high-surface-area materials called metal-organic frameworks, the device, powered solely by sunlight, can work in regions with low relative humidity.

Mount Etna Europe's most active volcano, Mount Etna, is sliding towards the sea. Scientists have established that the whole structure on the Italian island of Sicily is edging in the direction of the Mediterranean at a rate of 14mm per year. The UK-led team says the situation will need careful monitoring because it may lead to increased hazards at Etna in the future.
