Harlan County High School SBDM Council Meeting Minutes Date: March 9 2017 Time: 3:15 pm Location: HCHS Media Center Regular Meeting I. Call Meeting to Order: Principal Burkhart called the meeting to order at 3:20 pm. II. Roll Call: Ms. Alred, Mr. Branson, Mr. Henson, Mrs. Mackowiak, Mr. Pace, and Principal Burkhart. Ms. Alred, Mr. Henson, Mrs. Mackowiak, Mr. Pace, and Principal Burkhart are present. Mr. Branson is absent. Quorum is present to proceed with the agenda. III. Approval of Agenda: Motion to approve the agenda was made by Mr. Pace. Mr. Henson seconded. Consensus was reached. IV. Approval of Minutes: Approve meeting minutes for January 12 2017 meeting. The meeting scheduled for February 9 2017 was cancelled due to inclement weather. Motion to approve meeting minutes for January 12 2017 meeting was made by Mr. Henson. Mr. Pace seconded. Consensus was reached. V. Hear Individuals/Delegations: None present. 1

VI. SBDM Council Policy Review/Update: 1. Council will review HC 031 Voting Processes and Procedures Council discussed the need to add Junior candidates to the Miss Harlan County Pageant and decided to amend this portion of policy HC 031 only. Amended wording to HC 031: ***Nominations for the Miss Harlan County Pageant will also be open to Juniors to participate. They must meet the same criteria as listed in this policy. Juniors who participate will not be allowed to participate as Seniors. HCHS SBDM Council amended this policy on 3-9-17. Motion to approve the amended wording to HCHS SBDM Policy HC 031was made by Mrs. Mackowiak. Mr. Pace seconded. Consensus was reached. VII. ARI School Culture Report: No member of the Student Senate is present. VIII. Finance Report: Each member of the Council received a copy of the current Finance Report. IX. Principal s Report/Good News: 1. EOC scores have improved this year. 2. Future Problem Solving Team won First Place in 13 th Region and will participate in State Competition in March. 3. Members of the Harlan County High School Choir recently participated in the Southeastern Kentucky Music Association's All-Festival Choir in London. 4. Girls Basketball Team are 52 nd District Champions and 13 th Region Runner-Up. 5. Boys Basketball Team are 52 nd District Champions and 13 th Region Champions, and will play in the State Sweet 16 Tournament at Rupp Arena on March 15 th. 2

6. HCHS Cheerleaders won First Place in the 52 nd District Tournament competition and were 13 th Region 2 nd Runners Up. They will be competing in the State Sweet 16 Tournament on March 15 th. 7. Harlan County High School teacher Sandy Melton has been selected as a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction by the National Society of High School Scholars. 8. ACT scheduled for March 21 st. 9. HCHS Academic Team won 52 nd District Championship. X. New Business: 1. Curriculum: Principal Burkhart told the Council that there will be a few changes in Curriculum next school year. 2. Math: During the next school year, all students in the 9 th grade will take Algebra I. Students in the 10 th and 11 th grades will take Algebra II with students in the 11 th grade reviewing Geometry. 3. Scheduling: Science classes will be kept for each of the three trimesters. 4. Science Electives: Science electives will change next school year. Forensic Science, Genetics, and Environmental Science classes will be reduced. XI. Fundraisers: 1. JROTC requests approval to participate in a fundraiser at Wendy s. The JROTC will be working and serving customers on a date to be determined in February. Funds raised will be used to supplement Military Ball activities. *This fundraiser request was on the February 9 2017 agenda. 3

2. HCHS Future Problem Solving Team requests approval to participate in the My Story Festival being held on March 4 2017. Members of the FPS Team will be face painting. Funds raised will be used for FPS Team trip to state championship. Motion to approve both fundraisers was made by Ms. Alred. Mr. Henson seconded. Consensus was reached. XII. Trips: 1. HCHS Dance Team has submitted an Overnight Trip request for Feb. 18-19 2017. The Dance Team will participate in a competition in Frankfort. The form was submitted with all the required information. 2. HCHS JROTC Raider Team has submitted an Overnight Trip request for March 10-12 2017. The Raider Team will participate in competition in Artemus, Ky. The form was submitted with all the required information. 3. HCHS Honors Band has submitted an Overnight Trip request for Feb. 23-25 2017. The Band will be part of state competition at Eastern Kentucky University. The form was submitted with all the required information. Motion to approve all three Overnight Trip requests was made by Mr. Pace. Mr. Henson seconded. Consensus was reached. XIII. Addendum: None. XIV. Next Meeting Date: The next regular scheduled meeting date is Thursday April 13 2017. XV. Adjourn: Motion to adjourn was made by Mr. Henson. Ms. Alred seconded. Consensus was reached. 4
