Guests present: Margaret Miller, Frank Janiga, Tom Pinkley, Steve Snyder, Mary Alice Moore, Micki Kamrath, Julie Jones, Michelle Hooper, Scott Graves, Brian Gates. Cmdr. Moore called the meeting to order at 1300 hours. Cmdr. Moore discussed the lifetime teaching award for Bob Hunt and possible inscription for the plaque. Cmdr. Moore thanked Bruce, Kevin and Scott for a successful Poker Run. 31 players participated and we will like to do it again. A template for the event is in progress. A big thank you to all who participated In Pelican Fest. It was a nasty day but our tent looked good and worked well. Saturday was a rain out but the event went as good as could possible be considering the weather. Notes and suggestion for what we can do better would be appreciated. The squadron received a $1000 grant from Wal-Mart with no strings attached. Wal-Mart would support a vessel safety inspection in their parking lot. Manager Stony very supportive. 1
Motion to accept September minutes was made by Kevin Kamrath and seconded by Earl Starkman. Motion approved. District 30 meeting comments: o Barbara Zinn mentioned she questioned district #30 svanguard investment and was told the funds were to support start-up squadrons. However, if we submitted a budget with a shortfall funds could be available. Spring District conference will be in Pella, Iowa on April 5 th and 6 th. o Kevin Kamrath mentioned many Boulder USPS members have open water navigation experience. There was a seminar on Emergencies on the Water which discussed problems but not solutions. One of the members also gave a presentation on his sail from Puerto Vallarta to Tahiti. Ken Simpson was receptive to approving money for the boat simulator but the squadron would need to submit a proposal. o The squadrons were urged to consider Jump Start a program for on the water training for new boaters. o The National meeting in Minneapolis sent additional guidelines for name changes. USPS remains the United States Power Squadron operating as America s Boating Club (a promotional marketing tool). No need to change the GLSPS name. Some of the class names will be changing, (i.e. Seamanship to Boat Handling), but the letter designations after successfully completing the class (S) will remain the same. o Roger Zinn, Earl Starkman and Kevin Kamrath will work together to write a grant to procure funds for the simulator and also so we may be able to obtain National s simulator software. o Issues or publication using photos of non-members must obtain permission and a signed release from the individual whose photo will be used. o A plaque was awarded to Steven Dunner for long-time membership Membership concerns: Barbara Zinn is doing well. Dennis Rice is also doing well after knee surgery Cmdr. Moore thanked executive board members and the bridge for their service and urged the board to pass information on to new broard members. The squadron is still in need of a secretary. Rules Committee Report: No report Nominating Committee Report 2019 Slate was read by Pegy Miller. Discussion followed and it was decided we will have an appointed Assistant Executive Officer. 2
Auditing Committee Report: No report Treasurer s Report Lynda Watson Reported $13,998 in bank, which includes $275 made on Poker Run and the $1000 Wal- Mart grant. Executive Officer Barbara Zinn Still accepting donations for the silent auction at the COW. Please bring items to the dinner meeting or the COW committee meeting on Wednesday, October 24 at the GLA. The Christmas parade will be December 8 th and the theme is Christmas on the Lake. Todd Elson will generously donate a tri-toon for the squadron to decorate and has volunteered to pull it in the parade. We will decorate the float at the Miller s and ideas for the theme would be appreciated. Scott has volunteered to check the lights for the float. Safety Officer No report Life Jackets No report VSC No report Environmental Committee No report PR Committee Frank Janiga Seamanship October class is being promoted. A press release and copies of pictures from the Change of Watch will be submitted after the event, as will pictures from the Christmas party and the Christmas Parade. Pictures can be sent in to the Drop box by anyone, but make sure photos of non-members have releases. Boat Live 365 has promotional materials and playbook available for squadron use. Education Officer Roger Zinn Five individuals completed Seamanship and took the test and four passed. Another Seamanship is scheduled to begin October 22 nd. A CPR class will be offered November 6 th from 2 to 5 pm at the Monkey Island Fire Department. Thanks to Lynda Watson for her efforts in contacting Patrick Beehler and getting class scheduled. Class cost is $30 and class will accommodate 25 to 30 members. A survey determining interest in various courses will be passed out at the dinner meeting. Bob Hunt will assist in developing a checklist for Education Officer. 3
Administrative Officer Kevin Kamrath Next events: o Dinner Meeting October 18 at Eagles Landing catered by Maggio s. o December Christmas Party will be December 6, 2018 at River Bend Casino Thanks to Kevin Kamrath and Pat Janiga and their crew for wonderful dinner meetings. Membership Committee Mary Alice Moore No new members but will follow up with five households. We will have one guest, Cami Elie, at the dinner meeting. In an effort to show appreciation to current members, a thank you letter will be sent when they pay dues. $25 was spent for a burgee for the pegboard at the GLA. Ideas for the pegboard design are welcome. Christmas Charity several local charities were considered and the board voted to select the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), which offers assistance to children, as our Christmas charity. A motion to match members donations up to $500 was made by Kevin Kamrath and seconded by Barbara Zinn. Motion approved. Secretary report Arlene Starkman An inventory of the storage shed will be conducted before year end. All committees with inventory, please submit a list before squadron year end, October 31 st. Old Business: Boat simulator committee - Earl Starkman is still tweaking software. Grant Submissions: o GRDA, Wal-Mart o Need information from Rotary for deadlines for grants o Need committee to write grants which is easy to do, just follow past guidelines. New Business: Zinns introduced their son, Brian Gates, guest at meeting Suggestion was made to set up investment account for excess squadron funds similar to District 30. We need a new sound system.
