Holbrook Public Schools 245 South Franklin Street Holbrook, MA 02343 MINUTES OF THE HOLBROOK SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING HCAM STUDIOS June 13, 2013 In Attendance: School Committee: Barbara P. Davis, Chairperson John Flanagan Beth Tolson Joseph F. Baeta, Superintendent of Schools Bridget Baker, Recording Secretary The meeting was called to order at 7:05 pm by Ms. Davis. Ms. Davis congratulated Superintendent Baeta on receiving his Doctoral Degree. Student Advisory The Student Advisory Committee reported on the events of the past month which included the Winter Sports Banquet, Graduation, Mayflower League All Stars, $30,000 in scholarships, Spring Concert, 7 th 10 th Grade Semi-Formal, 7 th Graders trip to the Roger Williams Zoo, 8 th Grade trip to Gloucester, Whale Watch in Newport, RI, National Honor Society, and the Student Government Elections were held. They also took a moment to thank the Superintendent for all the improvements that have been made while he was in Holbrook. Project Citizen Ms. Clougher stated that forty (40) students from the Civics Club developed Action Plans for Social Justice in the School. They were nominated by Channel 7 News Class Act. Channel 7 News is going to use our Bulldogs Don t Bully Campaign as a model. Ms. Clougher asked that this be made an annual event the Wednesday after Martin Luther King day. The high school kids have been willing to come down and talk to the kids. End-of-Year Reports Superintendent Baeta stated that this was very useful last year. Feel free to utilize, publish and put on the district page. CPR Report Superintendent Baeta stated that we have received notification that this has been fully accepted. This has been completed but you need to stay on top of it. We have yet to get ELL Report. Have not heard anything about when that will be coming in. Page 1 of 5
Financial Update Financials were not discussed at this meeting Superintendent s Report Superintendent Baeta stated that Superintendent-Elect Patricia Lally has recommended Julie Hamilton to the position of Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Professional Development. Superintendent Baeta stated that Ms. Hamilton s strong views and accountability are a real asset. This creates an opening for Ms. Hamilton s position. Personnel Superintendent Baeta announced that Sean Culpepper and Paul Speakman both Mathematics teachers at the Junior-Senior High School have resigned effective the end of the 2012-2013 school year. School Handbook Revisions Mr. Flanagan made a motion to approve the Kennedy School Handbook Revisions for the 2013- (Flanagan/Tolson) made a motion to move to approve the Kennedy School Handbook Revisions for the 2013- Mr. Flanagan made a motion to approve the South School Handbook Revisions for the 2013- (Tolson/Flanagan) made a motion to move to approve the South School Handbook Revisions for the 2013- Mr. Flanagan made a motion to approve the Junior-Senior High School Revisions for the 2013- Mr. Flanagan added that he would like to make a request that there be more enforcement of students wearing bike helmets to school. Mr. Flanagan stated that he has spoken with Chief Marble. Mr. Hayward replied that he can definitely put more effort into engaging parents in penalty. (Flanagan/Tolson) made a motion to move to approve the Junior-Senior High School Handbook Revisions for the 2013- Appoint Superintendent to Board of Director of CHARMS Collaborative Mr. Flanagan made a motion to appoint Superintendent Lally to the Board of Director of CHARMS Collaborative. Chapter 40, Section 4E, as amended by Chapter 43 of the Acts of 2012, requires that members of the Board of Directors are to be appointed annually. The School Committee must make the appointment using this language: Incoming Superintendent Dr. Patricia Lally is appointed to serve as the Holbrook Public School s representative on the Board of Directors of CHARMS Collaborative, in accordance with Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 40, Section 4E as amended by Chapter 43 of the Acts of 2012 for the 2013-2014 school year. (Flanagan/Tolson) made a motion to move to approve Incoming Superintendent Dr. Patricia Lally is appointed to serve as the Holbrook Public School s representative on the Board of Directors of CHARMS Collaborative, in accordance with Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 40, Section 4E as amended by Chapter 43 of the Acts of 2012 for the 2013-2014 school year. 2013-2014 School Committee Calendar Ms. Tolson made a motion to approve the 2013-2014 School Committee Calendar. (Tolson/Flanagan) made a motion to move to approve the 2013-2014 School Committee Calendar. Appointment of Two (2) School Committee Members to the Permanent School Building Committee Mr. Flanagan made a motion to approve Ms. Tolson and Mr. Flanagan to the Permanent School Building Committee. (Flanagan/Tolson) made a motion to approve Ms. Tolson and Mr. Flanagan to the Permanent School Building Committee. Minutes from May 23, 2013 Mr. Flanagan made a motion to approve the Minutes from the May 23, 2013 School Committee Meeting. Cooperative Sports Memorandum of Agreement between The Avon School Committee and The Holbrook School Committee Superintendent Baeta suggested tabling until Dr. Lally has a chance to review. Superintendent Baeta will ask Dr. Lally to review. Mr. Flanagan made a motion to table the approval of the Cooperative Sports Memorandum of Agreement between The Avon School Committee and The Holbrook School Committee. Page 3 of 5

Class of 2014 Field Trip to New York Ms. Moriarty was seeking the approval from the School Committee for an out-of-state field trip. The itinerary is included in the School Committee packet. Ms. Tolson asked about Supervision which Ms. Moriarty explained that it would be herself and Mr. Bayersdorfer. There will be one adult to every 10-12 kids. Mr. Flanagan made a motion to approve the Class of 2014 Field Trip to New York November 21-23, 2013. Use of Facilities Mr. Flanagan made a motion to approve the Use of Facilities for the Holbrook Recreation Commission to have a Track and Field Youth Clinic on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 and Wednesday, July 17, 2013 from 6:00pm-8:00pm at the Junior-Senior High School running track and surrounding area. (Flanagan/Callahan) made a motion to move to approve the Use of Facilities for the Holbrook Recreation Commission to have a Track and Field Youth Clinic on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 and Wednesday, July 17, 2013 from 6:00pm-8:00pm at the Junior-Senior High School running track and surrounding area. 2-0-1 Mr. Flanagan abstained since he is on the Board of Recreation. School Committee Report Ms. Davis summarized the events of the last month which included the National Honor Society, congratulations to the King and Queen of the Court, Art Show, the Senior Reception, Class Night, South School Art Show and Graduation. Maintenance Situation Superintendent Baeta stated that we are still 4-6 weeks away for a Director of Facilities. Mr. Flanagan made a motion to approve the Memorandum of Agreement between Holbrook School Committee and AFSCME Local 1395 Holbrook Custodial/Maintenance Personnel.
