THE LONE STAR GAZETTE Spring State Approaching By: Katherine Thomas The last state-wide convention of this school year will be taking place next month, Aprill 22nd-24th at the JW Marriot in Houston. This event is one of the most important of the year because everyone will have a chance to participate in a political election. Students will be running for different state office positions such as governor, lieutenant governor, and speaker of the house, and everyone who attends the convention will be able to vote for which candidate they most agree with. Senators for the various JSA districts will also be voted for within district meetings. We also recommend that you be up to date with your house of cards viewing before attending Spring State so you ll be able to understand all the references (and won t have the 4th season spoiled for you). Just as with our Fall State, various debates will be occurring in multiple rooms throughout the day. Unlike Fall State, the entire convention will take place in the Marriot hotel. This is a must-go event for all Seniors as this will be your last convention of your high school career and will be a very emotional convention. Spring State brings many wonderful memories from quizbowl to Mr. JSA, and will definitely be an event to remember. The early bird price for this convention is $205 and the late price is $265 so sign up early!
Super Tuesday Results By: Andreana Yin By: Soojin Lee It doesn t take much work to find satire of politicians online. Simply scrolling through twitter gives one a multitude of Bernie/Hilary memes to choose from along with conspiracies of Ted Cruz actually being Kevin from the Office. With something as serious as the presidential elections, why are citizens so preoccupied with the humorous side of candidates rather than their plan on running our great country. Instead of being a civil presidential campaign, certain politicians (read title) have chosen a more interesting plan to get the presidency, through upright racism and blatant insults. In my mind, I believe that America people have gotten tired of listening to boring politicians blabber about their policies that they would never actually push through... Continued on page 5 On March 1st, eleven states and American Samoa held primaries to determine the candidates of the Republican and Democratic party who would run for the presidency. Out of the 11 states who voted for the Republican nominees, Donald Trump won 7 states and received 249 delegates (approximately 43% of the republican super Tuesday delegates. Ted Cruz won 3 states, most importantly Texas, of which he gained 102 delegates of the total 214 he got on super Tuesday. Rubio won Minnesota and Kasich won no state and both got a very small amount of delegates. In the Democratic primaries (11 states and American samoa), Hilary Clinton won 8 of the and gained 473 delegates (58% of the democratic super Tuesday delegates). Bernie won 4 and gained 336 delegates, putting him behind Hilary, but still having a chance in future primaries.
Police Brutality By: Jaylen Bradley As a black male in this country, I am constantly fearful of the American Police. Everyday we hear a new story about an unarmed African American being wrongfully murdered, and weeks late we hear of the officer receiving little to no punishment. I never speed, I never am out past 10, all out of the fear of showing up dead in the newspaper the next day. Police Brutality is an issue that is often overlooked throughout the campaign trail as a major issue, but in the lives of me and my people, it truly is. If the American public allows for this corrupt system of law enforcers to continue, it will only get worse and worse as the abuses of their power continue. Many people who aren t of color don t understand the prejudice we have to deal with on a daily basis, and I m not asking that racism itself be stopped, because I know that is impossible. I just believe that a system that is supposed to protect all Americans equally, should do its job correctly. No human being should be scared of the police if they are a law abiding citizen. Racism in the police force is an issue that needs to be dealt with. This is 2016, no government paid officer of the law should be able to shoot anyone without rightful cause. Over 25% of police have witnessed another police abusing a citizen most likely because of his/her race and nearly of them fail to report it. Sexual misconduct also is a huge issue in the police community. These policemen feel as though their position gives the power to do whatever they want. Recently, a girl was in a car crash and instead of getting her medical help, the police officer raped her and forced her to perform oral sex. The officer was only charged with 6 months in jail. Stories like these make me so upset because they make me think of all the terror in the world, and how the people who are supposed to protect you are the ones who abuse you. I'm scared for my family, my little sister, and any man woman or child who tries to stand up to the police because they will most likely be beaten up or killed for trying to make a change in a broken system. This isn t just a few bad apples who are causing the trouble, because on average 5% of all officer of the law have a complaint field against them for misconduct yearly. Police brutality affects our entire society and leads to murders and rapes, the system cannot continue this way. These officers must be harshly punished so no human will have to face these pigs of the police department again.

Also they spread awareness of each individual chapter and people involved in Texas JSA. Continued from page 3 Donald Trump and his campaign plays upon the frustration that many Americans have felt with the political system. They want an outsider who speaks their mind plainly for them to understand. While most politicians are generally smarter than the average American and speak as such, Donald Trump dumbs his views down and adds humor to entertain the American people. He speaks his mind a delves into all the non-politically correct views that some of the American people hold. This election has a lot of humor involved in it that is usually only promoted by the media to make things interesting. While I personally think Donald Trump would ruin this country, he is definitely smart when it comes to manipulating the America people. He is winning in all age groups, while candidates like Hilary struggle to form a connection with the younger generation. He acts in ways that give him tons of free media coverage that many of his opponents do not receive. Even when the media portray him in a bad light, such as John Oliver's segment on his supposed name, his followers love him even more. Many politicians are scared of his influence over the American people, and they have every right to be. However, he alone cannot be given all the credit for his success, because it was largely given by past politicians who have let the American public down. The election cycle has become a joke perpetuated by memes and parodies that circulate throughout the internet. A large percentage of the American public is tired of the ivy leaguers who speak fancy lingo and want someone who understands their anger and has not sold their soul to politics. We the people... Not we the editor. Without submissions from fellow JSA ers, the LoneStar would not exist. If there is an event or anything you important you wish to write about, please send it in.
