After a lengthy war, Americans formally won their independence from Great Britain by the Treaty ofparis in 1783; and, WHEREAS, all the courageous men and women who chose to fight for our nation's independence deserve special recognition. One such man is David Lindsay, a Revolutionary War soldier who served as a private in the Washington County, Pennsylvania Militia under Captain Robert Millar. Lindsay and wife Mary Casey Lindsay migrated from Pennsylvania to Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee before coming to Madison County, Mississippi Territory in 1816. David Lindsay, with his wife and children, settled in Shelby County, Alabama before statehood in 1819, and is one ofthe pioneer families in Shelby County. Many of his descendants are currently living in Shelby, Bibb and Jefferson counties; and, WHEREAS, on Alabama Day 1953, the David Lindsay Chapter ofthe Daughters ofthe American Revolution (DAR) dedicated a marker at the burial site for David Lindsey and wife which is located along Shelby County Highway 17 near Maylene, Alabama. From 2016-2018, the David Lindsay Chapter, NSDAR, Cahaba-Coosa Chapter, NSSAR, and Eagle Scout Caleb Jones, Boy Scout Troop 532, completed the joint project to renovate and mark, with historical lineage insignias, the David Lindsay Historical Cemetery in the year 2018 designated to honor Alabamians during the Alabama Bicentennial; NOW, THEREFORE, we, The Shelby County Commission, encourage our state to gratefully acknowledge and honor the service, sacrifices and contributions ofthose who helped to form our great nation.
