The next Erie test session will be held at Gannon, on Saturday, October 19 at 12:30. three and only three classes of Special thanks to Norma and her team for spending their Norma W3CG license instead of the Saturday mornings five. There promoting our hobby!! are also less THANK YOU people testing, although upgrading is the aim of APRS What is that? Have you heard of APRS? Do you have the capability of APRS but don t know how to use it. I m here to let you know it s easy and a lot of fun. Always know where you are and what the weather doing from miles and miles away. Thanks to Dr. Tom McClain, we have some valuable beginning information for APRS interested hams. Instructions: The freq is 144.390 for APRS. Download a copy of Win APRS from http://www.tapr.org/tapr/html/ Faprssig.html and set up your computer.

Volume 1, Issue 3 Page 3 General Meeting Minutes August 1, 2002 Board Members Present: N3ZUD, N3LBI, KE3XR, N3FAW, N3RKO, N3BXL, N3ZNP, and K3LD Not present: KA3WYO Meeting brought to order by President N3ZUD at 7:20, General Membership Meeting at the E.O.C. Guest: John (N3MSE) section Manager for ARRL and Dan (K3UFG) ARRL and Don (WB8KBE) Secretary s report- K3LD: motion to accept the minutes that were printed in the QuaRae Motion: KA2HVX Second: K3TJM Treasurer s report- KE3XR: Will have a report later. We received a bill for the roof and it has been paid, also they purchased the stuff for the wiring the electric in the EOC. Micki handed out the 50/50 tickets to be sold or purchased by members for drawing on Nov 7. They will mail all members tickets that were not at the meeting, please sell them and return the money and tickets stubs back to her. Thank you. Board of Directors report- Bob (N3LBI) talked about the wiring for the EOC, 50/50 tickets, QSL cards are coming in and (N3RKO) donated QSL cards for the club, so a request to have stamps available to send cards out was made. Elections are coming up. Membership- N3FAW: 163 members Contest- KB3A:.Chris had set up a HF station for the North American QSO party. It was a fun contest and Chris had brought his new Jupiter radio and auto tuner for people to test out. Micki (KE3XR), Steve (N3SRD) and Tony Zona (WB3KGT) showed up with Debi (KB3B) and Dianne (K3LD) and Chris. All who participated had fun, sorry you missed it. Chris would really like to see people get involved with HF so during the PA QSO a station will be set up at the EOC so please everyone come out and try it even once. You will have a blast. PA QSO is in October. Chris put a motion: purchase a small tri-band beam and small rotor for HF. N3RKO motioned that the Board and anyone with input come to the next board meeting to discuss it and go with it. Second: KE3XR motion carried. QuaRae: KC2HVX (Bob) Wants to know of anyone not getting a QuaRae let him know. Bob would like any suggestions, looking into better printing of paper copies. Most are going through the e-mail but about 50 are still being mailed. Bob is planning at least a minimum of 6 pages. N3LBI thanked Bob for taking the QuaRae over and doing such a good job. Public Service- N3RKO- Triathlon is September 7 and he would like volunteers, they have said that they will donate to the club for helping.. This is the last one of the season. Jack thanked eve- ryone that helped out this year. Jack raffled off another great picture to a ham that helped at the Paddle Erie N3ZNP was the winner. VE- K3LD- Saturday September 7 and October 5 will be at Panos on 38 St. East. Saturday September 21 and October 19 at 12:30 at Gannon ARRL: John (N3MSE) Talked about the Emergency Communications classes that ARRL are doing. In October only EC s, DEC s etc. are going to be able to take the course. They are not sure yet when hams and public will be able to take the class. If anyone is interested let Tom (N3HPR) or John (N3MSE) know. There is info for a on line class Item # 8462. A Eastern Antenna law to exempt ham antennas is at House level, check section bulletins for info. Dan (K3UFG) mentioned the hybrid class for mentor/instruction for online for the Emergency Communications class. They have to follow the guidelines for the grant. Some of the info is from Tom (N3HPR) and Erie Skywarn. They said the Government is finally giving Amateur Radio credibility. Even Gov. Schwieker said to do community service such as Amateur Radio ops. They are working on a State wide emergency plan to combine Western and Eastern PA. Continued on page 5

Page 4 QUA - RAE Bayfront Bash The Emergency Preparedness Drill a.k.a. Bayfront Bash, brought valuable information and experience to the many organizations that participated a few weeks ago. Almost thirty members of the amateur radio community participated in some aspect. Job well done by all involved! It was well worth the exercise. RAE members support community efforts A special thanks to special people on a special day at the special event held on September 7, 2002. Members of the Radio Association of Erie supported the Communityblue Triathlon. Members participating were: the three Bob s, N3LBI, N3FAW, KC2HVX; Doug, AD4UL; Steve, N3SRD; Joe, KB3ALU; Dianne, K3LD; Micki, KE3XR; Chris, KB3A; Debi, KB3B; Jim, KZ3C; Jack, N3RKO. Pat Davis says thanks from all the folks of The Commuityblue Triathlon. ~ Jack N3RKO Jack: On behalf of the club, I would like to specially thank you for all your hard work in planning all of the many events we had this summer. Volume 1, Issue 3 Page 5 Meeting Minutes continued... Education: N3BXL- Ron needs to know if anyone is interested to sign up for his repeater training class. Ron also has been in touch with Gannon and told the club can help them and see what commitments they need..64 running on the east side around Wattsburg. Under development. Skywarn: N3EOY not present ARES/RACES: Tom (N3HPR) Thanked all who participated in the Airport Drill. Went very well and they concentrated on communications. There was inter mod problems and will check into filters. Red Cross and EMS still have some bugs. Red Cross needs 80 meters up yet otherwise they have all antennas up. We are backup communications only. During any drill or actual emergency Tom wants all operators to keep transmissions brief. Ron (N3BXL) said one lady mentioned that it is all communications and that the amateur ops had the most credible numbers. The Bayfront Bash is this Sunday September 15 and will run from around 8:00 to 12:00. There will be no pre-assigned locations. It will be a county wide drill for Terrorism. Start net on.61 then go to.27 repeater and use simplex (55) Need ID badges to get involved. Listen to.61 around 7:30. New Business: N3LBI- Bernie Fuller (N3EFN) is running for Atlantic Division, if you re a ARRL member he will need your votes. He has done a lot for the club, boy scouts, and Amateur radio. Sandy (N3LKW) brought up that there are some sterno pans and aluminum pans from Hamfest that a restaurant would like to purchase from the club, since they are no longer being used. They are stored in Karen s (KB3ALT) basement. Sandy made a motion to board members to sell the items. Board had already discussed it at the last meeting and had been waiting for an item list. Board approved the sale and included if needed the two pans at the EOC. Micki (KE3XR) Lee (N3APP) would like to assist us on the repeater but won t if the contract with MobilCom is still in effect. Motion N3SRD to drop effective tomorrow Mobil Com. Second KA2HVX all in favor l opposed. Good of the Order: Tom (N3HPR) ARES/Races is now combined with the Skywarn nets at 9:00 on Sunday evenings on.61. Check in don t sandbag they need the numbers. Also get on APRS if interested contact Tom. Bob (N3FAW) members join ARRL through the RAE, make check out to RAE 50/50 raffle #23.50 won by N3BXL who donated $21.50 back to the club.
