JUDICIAL ELECTIONS

IN FLORIDA, ELECTIONS ARE HELD EITHER TO SELECT JUDGES OR DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT TO RETAIN JUDGES. SOME PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT JUDGES SHOULD BE APPOINTED AND NOT BE SUBJECT TO A POPULAR VOTE BECAUSE VOTERS ARE LARGELY IGNORANT ABOUT JUDICIAL CANDIDATES QUALIFICATIONS AND THE FUNDRAISING NECESSARY TO RUN CAMPAIGNS PRESENTS A POTENTIAL CONFLICT OF INTEREST THAT COULD IMPACT HOW A JUDGE MIGHT RULE ON CASES. OTHERS BELIEVE THAT BECAUSE JUDGES HOLD TREMENDOUS POWER IN OUR SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT AND THAT JUDGES SHOULD BE ELECTED AND SUBJECT TO POPULAR VOTE IN ORDER TO HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE TO THE PUBLIC.
