Committee Reports Councilman Austin Councilman Austin congratulated Patrolman Peter Stefanopolous on his swearing in tonight, and commended the Police Department as they continue the battle to get drugs off our streets. He said they are doing a great job. The following officers will attend the School Safety Conference in Washington Township New Jersey; Sgt. Owens, Det. Sgt. Moore, Cpl. Streater, Patrolman Leach, and S/O Osinski. Patrolman Pierson attended Training Agency Coordinator training in Mercer County, and he is now the Assistant TAC Officer for the department. On Tuesday, September 8, the Municipal Joint Insurance Fund will be offering a seminar entitled Training for Career Survival for new police officers. Patrolmen Decker, Pierson, Parker and Bailey are scheduled to attend. On September 26, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., Operation Take Back New Jersey will be held in the Police Department by S/O Osinski. At this time, residents may turn in old or unused prescription drugs for proper disposal. The Environmental Commission did not meet in July. Their next meeting will be on September 3, at 7:00 p.m. in Borough Hall. Councilman Austin concluded his report by stating that activity for the Fire Department has been quiet. Highland Chief Ryan Pierson has returned from the National Fire Academy. He has graduated from the Executive Fire Officers Program, a four year program of studies. Councilman Blass Councilman Blass reported that work is ongoing due to the June 23 wind storm: There is tree work still to be performed at the following locations: Magnolia Avenue field, located behind the Pitman High School Removal of stumps from around the Grove Auditorium Removal of stumps from Walton Park A tree on Third Avenue A tree on Ninth Avenue Some trimming in Ballard Park Councilman Blass stated that anyone who has a question about a tree may contact him or call the Borough Clerk s Office and we will have someone check it out. Lowe s has begun work on their Hero Project. Their personnel have already repaired the fence at Walton Park. The project will continue over the next several weeks to get Walton Park back in shape, along with some additional improvements. Councilman Blass met with the school district s Business Administrator to discuss ways to increase the district s recycling efforts. The Pitman Board of Education will meet on Wednesday, August 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Pitman High School Library. The Pitman Memorabilia Museum was open on August 8, and will be open during upcoming 4 th Friday events from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. 2

The Historic Commission will meet this Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the Memorabilia Museum. July statistics for the McCowan Memorial Library: Patrons 6,674 Internet users 347 Monthly circulation 4,393 items Story time 469 children The meeting rooms were used nine times The Museum Pass Program, which began earlier this year, has been quite popular. On July 31, Patrolman Parker and Patrolman Bailey brought the department s K9, Ranger, to a program at the library. The final program of the library s summer reading programs will take place on Thursday, August 13, at 2:00 p.m. It is called Super + Powers = SCIENCETELLERS. No registration is required, and all ages are welcome. The Friends of the Library are collecting books to sell at the Fall Craft Show. Councilman Razze Councilman Razze read the following report: Congratulations to Peter Stefanopolous for his swearing in as a Part Time Patrolman. Thank you to Administrator O Donnell for attending the JIF meeting in my absence. The Recreation Commission did not meet this month. The Economic Development Commission will meet this month, and two new appointments are on the agenda; one for an Administrative Assistant, and the other is to fill a member s position who has resigned, Pearl Brown. The Movie in the Park will be on August 28, at the Sunset Auditorium, at dusk. Councilman Pierpont Councilman Pierpont read the following report: The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection recently conducted an inspection of our Public Works facility, and no violations were reported. The report reflects that the Borough is in compliance with all regulations set by the DEP. Public Works Manager, Steve Alexander met recently with a representative from Conrail about the crossings in Pitman, specifically the crossing at Broadway. Improvements to the crossing and pedestrian walkway are being designed, but unfortunately, no timeline was established. You may have noticed that the yellow curbing and crosswalks are being painted. This is a continuing project with emphasis in our business areas and corridors. All Public Works employees attended a Ladder Safety training class. This training is mandated by our insurer and is required every three years. 3

Mulch is still available free of charge for Borough residents, and the opportunity to have a truck left on your property for clean-up is available on a first come, first served basis. Just call 589-1040, or use the Public Works page on the Borough website to schedule these services. The trash and recycling statistics from July 27 - August 7 are as follows: Fifteen loads of trash collected for a total of 174 tons Ten loads of recycling collected for a total of 27 tons Twenty-one loads of brush collected Fifteen loads of bulk trash were handled by our Highway Division. Councilwoman Higbee Councilwoman Higbee thanked the Public Works Department for their speedy response to her request last week to replace the missing No Parking sign on Northeast Avenue. Councilwoman Higbee thanked Dr. Blass for attending the recent Historic Commission meeting in her place. The Borough Tax Collector reports that for the month of July she has collected $1,943,000.00 in tax payments for the County, School Board, and the Borough combined. Councilwoman Higbee reminded residents that the last day to pay taxes without incurring interest is August 19. Council President Kelley Council President Kelley reported that the Planning & Zoning Board will hold their monthly meeting next Monday at 7:00 p.m. Discussion at that meeting will include Council s recommendations for changes to zoning in the C-1 District. The Borough s Green Team will meet on August 27 at 7:00 p.m. They continue to work on their application for certification with Sustainable Jersey. In the month of June, the Construction Office issued forty-one permits and fifty-one Certificates of Occupancy were processed. Fees collected for these services totaled $8,189.00 Miscellaneous Councilman Pierpont thanked Councilman Blass for contacting Lowe s and coordinating the work to be done at Walton Park at no charge to the Borough.
