Partner Response "Join, or Die" is a political cartoon, by Benjamin Franklin, and it was published before the Revolutionary War. Franklin created this cartoon to show the colonies that in order to win against England, they had to be UNITED and not separated. During that era, there was a superstition that a snake which had been cut into pieces would come back to life if the pieces were put together before sunset. 1. What do the snake s segments represent? 2. What is the cartoon s message? 3. Which group of people was the cartoon probably targeted towards?

Can anyone remember what caused colonists to dress up as Native Indians and sneak on a British ship to take part in the Boston Tea Party? The Tea Act This really, really, really ticked off the British!!!!! King George III was so upset, he decided he was going to punish the city that created this drama.

What does intolerable mean? Intolerable = not acceptable In retaliation for what Boston did to their expensive tea, King George III and the Parliament passed four (4) laws to punish Boston! Partner Turn & Talk: Thinking like a British king, what four laws do you think he passed as punishment? (write down your thoughts and we ll share out)

1. Close the port of Boston. No ships could come in or go out of Boston. Why was this bad? 2. The Royal Governor (reported directly to the King of England) could send anyone to jail. 3. No citizen was allowed to have town meetings, or meetings of any kind. 4. The Quartering Act was strengthened!!!

Because Boston was being punished so harshly by the British government that a group of colonists met in Philadelphia in 1774 to discuss the issue. The meeting to discuss the Intolerable Acts was called the First Continental Congress. 12 of the 13 colonies attended this meeting (Georgia did not attend) Looking at the Intolerable Acts in your notes, why was the First Continental Congress a sign of rebellion against the British (and illegal)?

"No taxation without representation! 56 total representatives from the colonies attended this meeting.

John Adams Samuel Adams Can you guess who these two guys are?!? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sl0yywwdtlq

Can you guess why this picture is wrong??? Women were not allowed to attend meetings. George Washington was not a main player at this time.

The Continental Congress wanted England to be aware of their bad decisions. So, these men drafted the following complaints to the King George III of England: #1 END the Intolerable Acts immediately! #2 Allow the colonies to go back to governing themselves like before. They also decided at this meeting that: #3 All colonies were to train militia to stand up to British troops. The Minutemen were born! #4 Everyone would boycott ALL British goods no matter what! #5 Each member swore to meet again if the British did not accept the demands.

When King George III received the hand-delivered message from the 1 st Continental Congress, he had no intention of giving in. What does this mean for the members of the 1 st Continental Congress? Instead of compromising with the colonies, the King sent hundreds of British military troops to the colonies!! HOWEVER, knowing what happened at the 1 st Continental Congress meeting, what does King George III not know? That the colonies have started training Minutemen to fight back..

British General Thomas Gage started hearing that Massachusetts Patriots were collecting illegal amounts of weapons. The Minutemen were collecting weapons just in case. These weapons were supposedly being kept in a town called Concord, Massachusetts. Note that Concord is 20 miles outside of the city of Boston. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_kou09z_ga (:00 3:38)

Concord, Massachusetts the location where the Minutemen were hiding the illegal weapons. (It s still there today!!!)

General Gage believed the rumors and immediately sent 700 British soldiers to Concord to seize the weapons, and to arrest any colonists guarding them. What General Gage didn t know was that the Patriots had already created secret communication systems to prepare for possible British military attacks! What was the name of the trained militia in each colony? The Minutemen This day marked the first day of the American Revolution. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiq-ja2arrg (1:35 end)
