Unit 7 General Police Duties Unit No: 7 Unit Title: SCQF Level: SCQF Credit Value: Unit purpose and aims: General Police Duties To apply the appropriate statutes that underpin the day to day duties of a police constable 1. Explain both the considerations in the control of firearms and prevalent firearms offences. 1.1 Explain the safety precautions, which must be complied with when handling firearms. 1.2 State the definitions for firearm and ammunition. 1.3 State the types of weapons which are classed as prohibited weapons. 1.4 Explain the relevance of component parts of firearms and firearms accessories. 1.5 Describe shotguns, air weapons and rifles. 1.6 Explain the offence committed by a person carrying a firearm in a public place and the offence of trespass whilst in possession of a firearm. 1.7 Explain your stop and search powers under the Firearms Act 1968. SFJ CK1 1.8 Explain the common law crime of reckless discharge and the statutory offence of firing an air weapon beyond premises. 1.9 State the criminal use of firearms under Section 17 and 18 of the 1968 Act. 1.10 State the controls in respect of young people for the following: 1

Carry out Licenced premises inspections, recognising procedures and key licensing offences 1.11 State the offence of failing to keep secure or report the loss of an Air Weapon. 2.1 Define the terms Licensing Board and alcohol in terms of the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005. 2.2 Explain the key aspects of an inspection of licenced premises: Premises Licence Personal Licence Operating Plan Premises Manager Core Licensing Hours 2.3 Identify offences relevant to sale and removal of alcohol outwith licensed hours. 2.4 Define police powers of entry to licensed premises and private members clubs. 2.5 Complete an Innkeeper entry following an inspection of a licenced premises 2.6 Explain the following terms with reference to licensing legislation Child Young Person Relevant Premises Responsible Person 2.7 Identify both the offence of selling alcohol to a child or young person and the statutory defence in relation to the sale of alcohol to a person under the age of 18. 2.8 Identify the offence of allowing the sale of alcohol to a child or young person. 2.9 State the offences relating to: 2

child or young person purchasing or attempting to purchase alcohol a person acting as an agent in the purchase of alcohol a person buying alcohol for consumption by a child or young person on licensed premises. 2.10 State the offences related to drunkenness and the police powers and procedures available to address these. 2.11 Explain procedures regarding consumption of alcohol in a public place and when you can confiscate alcohol.
