The Boardcaster Tuesday, February 3, 2015 MSBA presidency passes to Donovan Kirby Ekstrom (North Branch Area), Suzy Guthmueller (Centennial) and Amy Richter (Ely) became new members of the MSBA Board of Directors following elections held during the 2015 MSBA Leadership Conference. Ekstrom will serve a three-year term in MSBA Director District 9 (east-central Minnesota). Guthmueller will represent the north metro in Director District 5 by completing a one-year term. Richter will complete a one-year term in Director District 11 (northeast Minnesota). Kirby Ekstrom North Branch Area Kevin Donovan (Mahtomedi) is your new MSBA President. Donovan (at right in photo) transitioned from President- Elect to President Friday, January 16, during Day 2 of the 2015 MSBA Leadership Conference. Donovan originally joined the MSBA Board of Directors in 2010. He succeeds Walter Hautala (Mesabi East, at left in photo), who served as MSBA President from 2013-2014. Hautala started his MSBA Board service in 2007 and will now serve one year as MSBA s Past President. Longtime Spring Lake Park School Board Member Marilynn Forsberg became the second Minnesota school board member to total more than 1,000 career MSBA training points, enabling her to become a recipient of the Arlene Bush Board Member of Distinction Award during the Leadership Conference Recognition Luncheon. The award is named after former Bloomington School Board Member Arlene Bush. Bush amassed nearly 1,300 MSBA training points during her career. Northfield superintendent receives MASA leadership award The Minnesota Association of School Administrators (MASA) has named Northfield Superintendent Chris Richardson the recipient of the MASA Polaris Leadership Award. Richardson will be honored for his exemplary school leadership and a lifetime of balanced achievement inside and outside of education at a statewide recognition ceremony to be held at the MASA Fall Conference in September. In a letter of support for Dr. Richardson s nomination, Northfield School Board Member Noel Stratmoen wrote, Dr. Richardson is an educational leader with many great strengths including vision, hard work, thoroughness, frugality, and common sense. Page 4 Tuesday, February 3, 2015 Registration to open February 20 For Phase III Workshops Members can begin registering through their school district office for the Phase III Orientation workshop beginning on February 20. Registration must be made online via Event Registration at www.mnmsba.org. Phase III Orientation helps build a high-performing school board with a focus on leadership styles, consensus building and policy development. Phase III Orientation is designed for board members who have attended Phase I and Phase II, but others are also welcome. Attendees can earn 10 MSBA credits toward the individual board member award program. Members who complete Phase I, Phase II and Phase III will receive a Leadership Development Certificate. Royalton voters pass bond; La Crescent-Hokah voters oppose new school Royalton voters passed a $26.1 million bond referendum January 6. The district plans to use the funding for building projects and maintenance. The bond was approved by a 552-484 vote. La Crescent-Hokah voters rejected a bond referendum January 6 on a 1,964-1,041 vote. Had the vote passed, the district would have used the money to construct a new elementary school and upgrade its high school.
